The Impossible Has Happened; Portsmouth Are Onto the FA Cup Final!
Throughout the years, the FA Cup has seen many great upsets.
From a second division side in Sunderland beating a powerhouse Leeds United side back in the 1973 FA Cup final to Barnsley's incredible run in beating Chelsea and Liverpool back in 2008, the FA Cup has seen many incredible matches.
But today at Wembley Stadium, a new upset for the ages has joined the other great matches as Portsmouth have stunned Tottenham Hotspur by a 2-0 score in extra-time at Wembley to reach the final against Chelsea on Saturday, May 15.
Going into this match, Tottenham were a challenger for the fourth position in the Premier League table while Portsmouth, (who were officially relegated yesterday) have come together and have secured a 2-0 win.
Here is how this incredible upset unfolded:
First Half
With the expectations that they would win this match, Tottenham did not disappoint early on as they held control throughout most of the first half, but were unable to find a way past keeper David James as the Spurs failed to net a goal.
As the first half slowly started to end, Kevin Prince Boateng got the best chance for Pompey as his free kick went just wide, but Peter Crouch still was unable to put any headers past David James and as the first half ended, the match was still tied.
Second Half
As the second half started, the game started to slow down considerably from the free-flowing first half, but after Roman Pavlyuchenko came in for Jermaine Defoe in the 59th minute, the game once again picked up speed.
Soon afterwards, there were shouts for a penalty on Steve Finnan, but they were denied by referee Alan Wiley, and as the rest of the second half progressed, Portsmouth continued to get their best chances via the counter-attack.
But Crouch once again got several more great chances, as he rattled the crossbar late with another header, but the game remained scoreless as extra-time was the order of the day.
Extra Time
First Half
As the first half of extra-time started, Tottenham once again started up the attack, but the entire match flipped in the 99th minute, as Portsmouth took the lead.
They were able to do this off of a free kick from Marc Wilson, which found its way to Frederic Piquionne and into the back of the net to give Pompey the lead.
Afterwards, nothing else major happened as the half ended with Portmouth up 1-0.
Second Half
In the second half of extra-time, Spurs once again continued their attack, but it was Portsmouth who were able to win a penalty as Wilson Palacios was penalized for bringing down Aruna Didane.
And on the ensuing penalty, Boateng was able to score, giving Portsmouth the improbable 2-0 win and it is they who will be on the Wembley pitch again on May 15.
