G-Day Offense at The Half

Steve JonesApr 10, 2010

Spring practice is a time when jobs are up for grabs and players can step forward and get their foot in the door to grab a starting spot. Excitement is always up for the annual spring game and fans enjoy getting a look at some of the good things they can see in the fall. Players use this time to gain confidence and get their feet wet.

While the spring game has many positives in reality it is not a realistic game because the defense has the upper hand because the offensive playbook can only be so big. After all 15 practices the defense had a good idea of the play call and they can predict plays based on personel. The defensive players have a play call but they are able to anticipate a lot of the plays and they have a good idea of what is coming. That being said, the offense has to be extremely precise and they have to execute extremely well.

Best QB Seasons Since 2000 šŸ’Ŗ

My thoughts from the first half of the University of Georgia sprng game is lacking any surprise. The defense is playing pretty well, however, the offense is very much out of sync, lacking tempo. Like the rest of the "Bulldog Nation" Aaron Murray has been player I've been expecting to play really well.

In the first half Aaron was working with the second offense which has not looked very good at all. They are missing blocks and are not really able to get much going offensively. While the talent level is lower than the first offense, Aaron has not impressed me at all. I don't like his steps on roll outs and he isn't getting enough depth on his first step to get his shoulders flipped for a throw. He does throw very good ball but I don't like his pocket presence with the second group.

Not much has been given, by the media to Zach Mettenberger, which shows great ignorance from many writers. "Mett" has really shown a great presence in the pocket to avoid pressure. Although he isn't going to get hit, he has done a good job of stepping up to fire the ball down the field. One thing I really like out of "Mett" is his good job of driving and moving with his back leg allowing him to move in the pocket and fire the ball to his reciever down the field. He has looked the most fundamentally sound to me and shown great confidence in his opportunities.

Logan Gray has been as adveritised to be the third string or experience a a position change. He has looked indecisive and I do not want to call him scared but he has shown a reluctance to run and make a play. As a Quarterback it is imperilous that you make a decision and complete the play. That decision can in checking the ball down on a hi-low read or an inside out read. If the throw is not there you have to decide to either throw the ball away or run and he looks very confused with a lot of his decisions.

My impressions of the depth chart at theĀ QB position, based on the first half, would be "Mett", Murray and Gray 3rd going into the fall. I have not been very impressed by the way the offense has been competing and it looks like a very sluggish game so far.

I have liked to see the development of Rontavious Wooten, who is looking like he will be able to make an impact on the offense in the fall. The second half has just started and Aaron has his opportunity with the first string and the tempo has picked up a bit but Murray killedĀ a drive with a turnover on a tough decision. The play was a play action and pop'd his feet with a blocker and a linebacker bumping him and he threw fired an errant pass.

As a QB, you've got a caution system with Green, Yellow and Red lights. Green means the play is being executed and its time to play ball. Yellow is taking caution and Red means something is wrong get what I can even if that means a sack. *IN RED YOU NEVER FORCE ANYTHING* "Mett" has shown the best ability to work this caution system andĀ has done aĀ done a great job of doing his job, which is put the offense in positions to score. To me Mett has shownĀ so far to be the best Quarterback on the UGA roster.Ā
