Wells, Colvin Shine in Cubs' First Win
Cub fans you can now exhale. The Cubs have finally won their first game, avoiding the series sweep by Atlanta. Theย performanceย of starting pitcher Randy Wells, and outfielder prospect, Tyler Colvin, is great news for the Cubs.
Randy Wells,ย in myย opinion the Cubs' best pitcher, pitched aย phenomenal, scoreless six innings. Wells walked two and only struck out one, but only gave up a modest six hits. Well'sย performanceย is a breath of fresh air after two tough losses, one being a season opener to forget.
The win almost didn't happen. As the Cubs seem to do to Wells, they can't give him run support when he pitches well.ย Luckily recent newcomers to the Cubs' lineup, Tyler Colvin and Marlon Byrd, produced all the runs the Cubs needed. Colvin hit his first major league home run in the second inning after getting the nod over Alfonso Soriano.
Not to be overlooked though, the Cubs' bullpen played a great game also, coming in the 7th inning and keeping the Braves to no runs.
Carlos Marmol got his first save of the year, but walked a man, breaking the golden rule of closing. A closer can not, I repeat, walk a man in the ninth and be successful for very long,ย especiallyย in such a close game.
Marmol's tendency to lose his control of pitches makes me a skeptical of his closing abilities. It's defiantly not going to help him, and I am guessing it's going to catch up with him later in the year. He won't get lucky, like he did Thursday night, every time.
Young and new power helped the Cubs get their much needed first win because God forbid the Cubs go 0-3! Another newcomer, Carlos Silva, will be on the moundย Fridayย as the Cubs take on the ย Cincinnatiย Reds.
