When Duke Has a Problem Next Season, Kyrie Irving will Be the Answer

Henry BellApr 7, 2010

The season is over. Duke had a rather successful season once again. But can next season be like this one? Can they win a championship?

Of course they can, but it'll take hard work...and a guy named Kyrie Irving.

In the '09-'10 season, Duke struggled in one key aspect: having a pure point guard. Someone that would dribble the ball up the court and dribble by all opponents. They were forced to pass the ball. They had Jon Scheyer, but he wasn't what one would call pure. He was efficient, but not as pure as Duke needed him to be.

Coach K immediately knew what needed to be done for the upcoming season: sign a pure point guard recruit.

It's as simple as that.

Duke was able to get away with not having a solid point guard because they had other options—Kyle Singler, Brian Zoubek, and Lance Thomas.

If Kyle Singler doesn't return, Duke will be headed for a miserable season. Or will they?

Not a chance, but we need a point guard that dominates.

Kyrie Irving.

At first I had no idea who this guy was but then I saw his highlight video and he was unbelievable. He's a perfect fit to Duke's puzzle for another successful season.

Why would this guy be such a perfect fit?

Let me tell you why.

Brian Zoubek will be headed to the NBA draft this summer leaving Duke, leaving his big man position to the Plumlees. These brothers are solid players that can score, rebound, and play solid defense. This is where Kyrie Irving comes into the equation.

He will be the one that will create plays on offense—the playmaker.

He must attack the hoop to possibly finish the play on his own, kick it out to one of the shooters (Andre Dawkins, Seth Curry), or dish the ball to one of the Plumlees for an easy two.

Coach K recognizes Kyrie Irving's importance for Duke's upcoming season to do what he's done for his whole career....win.
