Excitement in College Basketball
So, I was watching ESPN First Take this morning and the topic was last nights National Championship game between Duke and Butler. Now the topic wasn't really about whether or not it was a good game, because it was, but rather about race.
Why is it that in basketball it is always about race? Yes it has been taken over as a predominately African American sport these days, but Ā look as some of the best players to ever play. Bird, Pistol Pete, and more recently Nash and Dirk. Last time I checked Nash has more MVP's than LeBron and Kobe.Ā
But back to the what I wanted to say.
Last night was a great game played between two predominately white teams. It was a great game and both teams showed great skill in getting to the title game. But on First Take , one of the people debating said that he loved watching Melo's championship run more than he did both of last nights teams journeys. Because he said that Melo not only dominated and did it having fun.Ā
Yeah because no one last night had fun in their run to the title game.
But Jim Boeheim himself will tell you that they wouldn't have won any title if they didn't have Gerry McNamara. Ā I mean as I can remember every shot that kid hit was a big shot. Or even when Syracuse lost to Vermont in 2005. Probably the most ridiculous play in that years Tournament wasĀ tj sorrentine's shot from 30 feet out.Ā
So my point here is that regardless of white or black or whatever color, excitement isĀ excitement. I loved watching last nights game regardless of race, and I love when teams make great runs to the title game, also regardless of race.
It is just Basketball if you win, you win. It is a team sport whether you are a team of all African Americans or all white. Shouldn't the game itself be the exciting part, regardless?
