New and Improved? Ten Predictions For The 2010 Minnesota Twins
The Minnesota Twins have a new look.ย They have a new lineup, a new closer, even a new ballpark.
But does that make them better?
The new additions are promising.ย J. J. Hardy, Orlando Hudson, and Jim Thome could all add extra spice to an offense that finished fourth in the AL in runs last year.ย Jon Rauch posted a 1.71 ERA after joining the Twins late last year.ย And Target Field has gotten rave reviews by the fans and players who have experienced it.ย

But new additions can alter a lineup's chemistry and lead to a slow offensive start. The new ballpark, while exciting, exposes the Twins to things like wind, sun, and rain (and snow?).ย It also takes them away from the Metrodome, often called "the best home-field advantage in baseball."
And don't forget that having Rauch as a closer means loss of all-star Joe Nathan.
So what does this mean for the upcoming season?ย Here are 10 predictions that try to sort out the 2010 Minnesota Twins, both new and old:
1. J. J. Hardy hits 26 home runs and notches over 100 RBI.
2. Francisco Liriano pitches fewer than 150 innings.ย So does Carl Pavano.
3. Denard Span and Orlando Hudson combine to score over 180 runs.
4. Kevin Slowey finishes the season with 17 wins and an ERA under 3.20.
5. The Twins' starting third baseman job won't be settled until July.ย That player isn't on the opening roster.
6. Jon Rauch goes 41-46 in save opportunities with a 2.50 ERA.
7. Justin Morneau bats .314 and hits 20 home runs.ย After the All-star break.
8. Delmon Young's error total is within ten of his home run total.
9. Joe Mauer hits less than 25 home runs.ย He still finishes third in AL MVP voting.
10. The Twins get 50 of their 97 wins at home and finish on top of the AL Central.ย They go on to lose to the Yankees in the playoffs.ย Again.
