WEC flyweight division to come, but when?

The WEC is known as the lighter version of the UFC - filled with talent, but the fighters just weigh less.

Since early 2009, there has been talk of a flyweight division (125 pounds) coming to the WEC, but so far, there have been no steps taken to get flyweights onto a card.

Reed Harris, the WEC's General Manager, told MMAJunkie.com that he wants to concentrate on the current weight classes before adding a new one, although he is "still entertaining" a 125-lbs. division.

"What we had to look at," he said, "is that we had a roster of fighters now, and in order to keep these guys in top condition and to keep them in fighting mode, you have to give them a certain amount of fights over the year. I think that's one of the things we do better than any organization out there."

The WEC currently has three divisions: lightweight, featherweight and bantamweight. In December 2006, after five years of being in practice, the WEC got rid of its super-heavyweight and heavyweight divisions. Two years later, they eliminated the light-heavyweight, middleweight and welterweight divisions as well. For the past year, the flyweight division was said to be in the mix, but a fourth division has yet to creep into events.

"To add that flyweight division would dilute that somewhat," Reed said, referring to giving the current fighters a certain amount of fights per year. "And we felt like we needed some time to still catch up with the guys we had. So we're still looking at that, but right now our focus is getting our fighters fights and keeping them in contention for those titles and things like that."
