Face It 49er Fans, and Experts Are to Offensive

william rouseApr 3, 2010

From the draft gurus, to the most knowledgable of the faithful, one thing seems  to be forsure, that come April 22 the 49ers will have drafted an offensive tackle in the First Round of the 2010 NFL Draft. According to the experts, this pick is "supposidly" the surest thing next to death and taxes. If you are doubting me, check out any mock draft, including the ones online or in the pages of a magazine at your local market.

I'm sure your asking yourself so what, why does this matter?  The answer, the SF line was woeful, to say the least, and was the bane of last years season. As a result, it is clear to everyone, which includes the arm chair GM's, that the line is priority #1 and I agree. However, chew on this,

However when your car breaks down you dont go buy the first one you see. You shop around, hopefully finding the best ride for your individual needs. So come Friday April 23, and what will be called the surprise of the first round, the 49ers will have failed to address thier number one need twice in the first round. And this will be a nice move.

So here is the jist of it.When the 49ers pick at 13, many top draftnicks have about four tackles off the board. Some predicting five! So my question to you is this "do you take the fifth best (ot) in the country, or the best (wr?) The best (cb?}, Best (rb), or a number two (fs) , or an (olb)? From my humble research as an average fan, who simply love's his niners. I have noticed that after Okung, the top 5 ot's can be put in any order. So its reasonable we would get the second best tackle, even though he is the sixth off the board. But to me its clear that (ot's) Capers, Veldheer, and Brown are not far from the top five group of tackles in terms of skill. Where these guys, and other (ot's) like them do stop measuring up is thier projected round they are to be drafted. Believe me, thier is not much differance in the quality of tackles after Okung. Lots of very solid prospects. No elite gamechangers though. So why take a tackle in the first? We will get solid  future starters on the line in the middle to late roundsIf the front office did choose to go tackle in round one, here is just a taste of who they  may have to pass on.  How about (olb) Kindle out of Texas? He will  wreak havoc on offenses for years to come.Or the freakishly gifted Bryant (wr) out of Oklahoma State? Concerns of speed, and maturity has this once sure fire top 5 pick falling to the Niners even at17! Forget the naysayers, the kid can flat out play. He, and currant 49er (wr) Crabtree are the to greatest recievers to come out since Marshall's Randy Moss. I know a falling star at (wr) is a bit of deja vu, but pair these two playmakers, with Davis, and instantly SF has one of the most feared passing attacks in the NFL. Alex Smith also goes to the probowl with the pickup of Dez, while claiming his spot among the games five best signal callers. Laugh, but its true. He's that close! Everyone whos following the draft knows about Clemsons (rb) CJ Spiller. Unless you're  baby has you watching Greys Anatomy, and The Bachelor, instead of E.S.P.N. (We've all been there)...Well how do I explain ol' CJ. Electric! He's listed as a running back, so he can spell Gore.Spiller is a differant kind of cat than anyone currantly in the 49er's backfield. With blazing speed getting to the outside, he puts enormous ammounts of presure on the edges! This opens up the seam that Alex Smith, and Vernon Davis exploited on a regular basis last year. Add Spillers top  end speed to stress the edges, and Davis will bust that seam wide open day in, day out! (Go ahead wipe that drool!) By the way he's a great slot reciever. Have I mentioned he's the best return man in the draft? (Our 49ers second biggest need). He is only one pick, but he fills four needs! Amazing! What value too. Imagine adding Florida's (cb) Haden. If you dont know picture Darrelle Reevis (NY Jets), just more athletic! Now imagine pairing him with Earl Thomas (fs) out of Texas. A rangy ballhawk who adds a centerfieder to the mix, allowing Goldsen to move to (ss), with Clements locking down the other side the sacks, and turnovers, will skyrocket.
