Auburn Football: Tiger Defense Quietly Building a Core Unit in Spring
As most of the attention so far this spring has been on the offense, the defense is really a story that must be told.
Finishing 11th in the SEC in total defense was nowhere near what the players or the coaches expected in the 2009 season. A lack of depth was the usual comment for the Tigers.
Depth no longer the issue is, if you allow a twist of phrase from a famous intergalactic character.
The defensive line will have Nick Fairly, Mike Blanc, Antoine Carter, and Michael Goggans. All four either started or saw significant playing time last season. Those battling for playing time include Zach Clayton and Nosa Eguae.
Linebackers Josh Bynes, Jonathan Evans, and Craig Stevens will be the forefront of the improved depth along this group of players. Eltoro Freeman is expected to pick up his game this spring, and don't be surprised to see names like Patrick Butler and Joey Caldwell jump into the mix.
The most interesting moves have come in the secondary. Aairon Savage and Mike McNeil are both returning from injury last season. They will bring more leadership into the secondary than last season.
Once McNeil and Savage are added with Zac Etheridge, Neiko Thorpe, and D'Antoine Hood, it allows the secondary to be more versatile with personnel. Secondary coach Tommy Thigpen has been impressed with walk-on Ikeem Means from Wetumpka, Alabama.
Just by the players participating in drills this spring, there seems to be more possibilities with the defensive front.
The incoming recruiting class will have its chance to shine, but spring offers a starting ground for those familiar with the system.
In year two under head coach Gene Chizik, the defense will have a better chance to develop a core group that could be problematic for opposing offenses come this fall.
