Is San Francisco 49ers Head Coach Mike Singletary Mental or Mentality Changer?

Keith EmmittApr 1, 2010

It is my opinion that San Francisco 49er head coach Mike Singletary has done a good job of turning around the mentality of the young 49er team.

People have noticed the change with the organization as well.

No longer is the team being looked at like a man with the plague, but pundits are actually picking the 49ers to win the NFC West Division.

The players seem to buy into Mike Singletary’s hard-nosed, no bull, keep it simple stupid, get it done and never quit personality. Last year, the 49ers defense exuded great confidence and it showed up well against some of the better teams in the league.

Yes, the team lost to Minnesota, but not without some good plays by the very same defense that missed on the last play of the game.

Dre Bly whiffed on an interception with 1:32 left in that game, which could have possibly given a win to the young 49ers. Nevertheless, Brett Farve saved the day and Shaun Hill and the 49ers went home losers.

That day Mike Singletary performed admirably as a head coach. He did one major thing that day to this team: he settled them down! The player we all know Mike Singletary to be on the field planted itself firmly on the 2009 defense in that moment.

Again in that game, Mike Singletary called a time out with 3:21 on the clock with Minnesota driving towards a touchdown in the second quarter and the 49ers backs against their own 20-yard line.

In my opinion, that was a defining moment for the Niners. Whatever Mike said to the team in that timeout worked. They held the Vikings to a field goal and kept the score at a six-point margin.

On the next defensive series, the team blocked a field goal to take the lead going into the half. Coach Singletary inspired this series of events. He also gave the team a chance to show how he as a coach had grown from the year before.

The Indianapolis Colts, the Houston Texans and the Green Bay Packers all found out what Greg Manusky and the 49er faithful already knew. This was an improved defense and they weren’t going to have an easy day no matter how great their reputations were.

The 49ers lost all of those games by seven points or less. No losses don’t bode well for a second-year coach and how can it be said that losses help improve a team?

All of those set backs showed the fight and will this team has. It showed how one motivational, well-liked, hard-nose coach can turn around a bunch of guys, whom no one thought would be any good.

The offense is not exempt from Mike Singletary’s inspirational coaching either. Quarterback Alex Smith has a new outlook due to the faith his head coach has in him.

Tight end Vernon Davis became a Pro-Bowler due to the faith Mike Singletary has in him. Now, maybe Singletary can inspire the rest of us with a playoff win.

That would definitely motivate his dissenters to climb on board as well.

Mike Singletary is clearly the right guy for the job and there are many loyal fans that say Mike Singletary has a way of turning bad into good.

He helped turn the Chicago Bears into a winner as a player and hopefully he can help turn the 49ers into the same this year.

It's time to return to being champions, 49ers!
