When you think of the truly great head coaches in NBA history you think of Pat Riley,Red Aurabach, Phil Jackson, Larry Brown. It's hard to look at one young head coach and say he will be great. But when you see Scott Brooks you see the fire, the passion for his team. This Thunder team went from 23-59 last season to 4 wins a way from getting 50 wins this season. What's probably the most surprising about the Thunder's turnaround is there defense, which is top 5 in the NBA this season. Scott Brooks also made the right decision by sticking by his starting point guard Russell Westbrook instead of drafting Spain point guard Ricky Rubio, who by the way is still in Europe. Russell Westbrook has not only showed he can be a point guard, but he has also showed he can be a top 10 point guard in the NBA for years to come.
Now just showing confidence in your young guard doesn't seem like a big deal. But when everybody is telling you that your starting point guard should be a two guard and there is this young phenom who has been compared to one of the greatest players in basketball but instead of drafting him you pass on him, you would look an idiot & bad coach. But that turned out to be the smartest move as Russel Westbrook is looking like he could be a top 10 point guard, while Rubio will have to wait another year to be in the NBA.
Scott Brooks has won 46 games where his top 3 scorers are under the age of 24! That is almost unheard of, to have your three best players be that young and have won 46 games. I think if you put a just a good coach with this team they would probably be a little under 500 winning percentage.
Scott Brooks has shown greatness as a young coach helping this extremely young team turn into a playoff team. They might not do much in the playoffs, but with a great young head coach and great players there future does look bright.
