Manuel Almunia....A Top Fella But a Top Keeper?

Coming home from St Andrews today, I felt low; I feel it was a game we had in the bag and one we needed to win.

Its very easy blaming an individual and that individual has been Manual Almunia. Almunia did make a massive error and the freak goal did cost us two very important points.

The jury has always been out on Almunia. It would be unfair to forget the penalty save last week against West ham. If the Hammers had scored and the game was 1-1 with 10 vs 11, then it could have been a completely different game. We certainly had Almunia to thank last week.

The way I look at it is, we can complain, moan and voice our displeasure all we want, but the transfer window is shut, we cannot buy a keeper now. Instead we just have to support the ones we have. That is the only way we can win something this season. The game today felt like a defeat, but we are Arsenal FC, we have to keep going.

I am not saying Manual Almunia should be our number one because I am unsure too but I do feel backing our keeper is the only thing we can do because there is no other option.

I think the competition for the goal keeping position does need to be stronger, as I feel it’s a little too easy for Almunia to stay as Arsenal’s number one and if we look back in history, David Seaman had to see of the challenges of Richard Wright, Stuart Taylor and Alex Manninger in his time here, where as Almunia has not had a major threat.

Almunia does have many strength’s and does produce some world class saves but I think he lacks the confidence at times to come out when he should and his kicking can be hit or miss.

What ever happens in the summer will happen, but as fans, we must back our team and our keeper and opinion’s can be voiced, but they should wait till the summer.
