Apple Buys Out Super Aguri
In a bold move by Steve Jobs, Apple—the maker of the iPod, iPhone, iTunes, and other such hardware and software—will be joining Formula One next season as a team after buying out all of Super Aguri's assets two weeks ago. The new team will be known as iRacer.
"I bought the team two weeks ago and I think it's great that we'll be competing for glory in the pinnacle of motorsport" said Jobs in a press conference this morning.
"I have waited to make the announcement today because of the launch of the new iPhone 3G and thought it would make a great double entendre," he explained when asked why he held off until today.
iRacer's equipment will follow the "i" rule as all its products have. The mechanics and engineers will be known as the iCrew, the racers will be known as the iCars, the team principal will be known as the iBoss, the drivers will be known as the iFast, and the engine will be known as the iPower.
Apple will receive engines from Honda in exchange for access to touchscreen steering technology, click wheel gear shift, and internet access for drivers to check their e-mails and send photos while they race.
"I think it'll be a great experience," Jenson Button said after being told of the buyout, "I may not necessarily win, but at least I'll feel a little more comfortable."
As for the drivers, Apple is looking to GP2 and finding the best drivers that haven't been snatched up by a team for next season.
Apple is not the first corporation to buy a Formula One team in its name. Jaguar and Minardi were bought out in 2004 and 2005, respectively, by Red Bull, the energy drink company, and they have added a flair of fun to Formula One. Apple hopes to do the same.
"I just want to have fun and get something out of my measly $1 per year salary that I have as CEO of Apple" said Steve Jobs.
