Crohn's Disease: Will It Deter The Giants From Selecting McClain?

Mani BurtonMar 13, 2010

Rolando McClain, the consensus top inside linebacker entering the 2010 NFL draft, wasn't able to perform in on-field drills at last month's Combine work outs in Indy. McClain performed for scouts at his all important Pro Day on March 10th.

Going into his pro day, many scouts questioned whether McClain was athletic or fast enough to hold up in the middle of an NFL defense. As expected, Giants head coach Tom Coughlin and other Giants talent evaluators were among scouts from all 32 NFL team present for Rolando's work out.

McClain came out and silenced his critics, by running the 40-yard dash in 4.69s and 4.68s respectively. His time was deemed admirable by scouts for a man his size.

McClain also ran well in the short shuttle by recording a 4.41s.The short shuttle tests, burst, acceleration and quickness in a short area—an attribute that's paramount for NFL defenders.

Now that his pro day work out is in the books, its widely touted in NFL circles, that McClain has all the physical attributes to be a stud on Sundays. At the tail-end of his pro day. McClain revealed to reporters and scouts, that he would not finish his work out due to stomach pains stemming from Crohn's disease of which he suffer's.

Crohn's disease is an inflammatory bowel disease. It causes inflammation of the lining of your digestive tract, which can lead to abdominal pain, severe diarrhea and even malnutrition.

McClain said he treats the condition with seven or eight pills daily. "McClain never missed a game at Alabama or had to leave a game because of the condition" said his agent, Pat Dye Jr., in an attempt to ease the concern about McClain's condition.

Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback, David Garrard also suffers from Crohn's disease. However, doctors with knowledge of the disease said, the level of severity varies for each person that suffers from the disease.

McClain's public revelation of his fight with Crohn's disease, sparked a wide spread debate between fans, NFL pundits and people that weren't aware of his illness. Everyone seems to think that this illness will cause McClain to fall in the draft. If that assumption is accurate: Will Jerry Reese take McClain at 15th, given the knowledge of his medical condition?

If cleared by the Giants medical staff, I'd be hard press to think that, Jerry Reese would pass on him. However, we'll get the official answer to this question, if the aforementioned is still on the board, when Draft day rolls around.
