MLB: New York Yankees Down Boston Red Sox in Extras
In 10 innings Sunday night, the Yankees knocked off the Red Sox 5-4.
New Yorkย pitcher Joba Chamberlain got his first look at the BoSox as a starter. Chamberlain went six innings, allowed three runs on four hits, walked four and punched out five.
Boston knuckleballer Tim Wakefield went 6.1 innings, allowed three runs on four hits, walked one, and struck out five.

The Yankees got their first run in the second inning with a solo home run from Alex Rodriguez. This was Rodriguez's 18th round-tripper of the year and the 536th of his career. With his homer, he ties Mickey Mantle for 13th placeย on baseball's all-time home runs list.
Boston got three runs in the top half of the fifth frame, and took the lead at 3-1. Second baseman Dustin Pedroia had two RBI in the inning while Kevin Youkilis scored on a wild pitch by Chamberlain.
The Yankees would cut the lead to 3-2 in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI from Derek Jeter.
Also in the sixth inning, Yankees' Manager Joe Girardi was less than happy with home plate umpire Laz Diaz's strike zone. Out of frustration, Girardi stormed out of theย dugout and argued with Diaz resulting inย his ejection.
The Red Sox would get an insurance run in the top of the seventh with an RBI from catcherย Kevin Cash, making the score 4-2.
The Yanks would answer right back with two runs in the bottom of the seventh. Robinson Cano smacked a two-run triple to knot the game at four. Cano eventually was called out at home plate attempting to score on a Melky Cabrera ground ball.
With the score tied at four after nine innings, the game went into extras.
In the bottom of the 10th, the Yankees' rookie left fielder Brett Gardner hit a walk-off single to score Cano from second, giving the Yankees a win and series split with the Red Sox.
Mariano Rivera of the Yankees captured the win and evened his record out at 3-3 on the season.
Jonathan Papelbon of the Red Sox took the loss and isย also 3-3 overall. Javier Lopez recorded a blown save as he failed to hold Boston's lead.
Boston is now five games behind the first place Tampa Bay Rays, and New York remains nine games out.
The Rays will come to the Bronx Tuesday night. Scott Kazmir (7-3, 2.63 ERA) will pitch for Tampa. Sidney Ponson (5-1, 4.19 ERA) is penciled in as the Yankees' starter for Tuesday as of press time.
