Can Alabama Help Georgia Win the SEC East This Year?
Larry Burton (Panama City Beach, Fl) This is a year when the Crimson Tide will be the University of Georgia's best friend and more Georgia fans will be pulling for the University of Alabama than ever before. Will Mark Richt be sending Nick Saban sweet little notes and boxes of chocolates?
It could happen and this is why.
On October 2nd, 2010, the University of Florida comes to Tuscaloosa to play the Tide and the biggest obstacle that Georgia faces every year could leave with an SEC loss. Truly, the enemy of my enemy is my friend.
Then on October 23rd, Alabama goes to the University of Tennessee to do battle and another SEC team that Georgia frets over. This could have another SEC loss for a foe to deal with.
Should any other team manage to upset either Florida and Tennessee as well, then Georgia would only have to go .500 in winning against either team and knocking off the rest of the SEC schedule to get a trip to the SEC Championship Game.
This year, they don't play LSU or Ole Miss, teams that could give them trouble. That just leaves a rebuilding Auburn team and a likewise rebuilding Tennessee team to contend with.
Yes, the University of Alabama could be Georgia's best buddy and pal this year.
That is until they have to face them in Atlanta in the big championship game.
With Florida's coaching swapping, Tennessee's new coach, and a relatively easy schedule, this could be the best year in a long time for the Dogs to get back to a championship game.
That is if they can take care of business with the rest of the schedule and let Alabama do the dirty work of making sure the big SEC East contenders have a loss.
Georgia's schedule could break down like this.
UL - Lafayette - win
South Carolina - win
Arkansas - tough win
Mississippi State - win
Colorado - win
Tennessee - win
Vanderbilt - win
Kentucky - win
Florida - loss
Idaho State - win
Auburn - hard win
Ga. Tech - loss
That would give Georgia one SEC loss and Florida would have one courtesy of Alabama. That means that Florida would also have to survive a tougher schedule by virtue of having to play LSU, who always plays Florida tough.
In the end, with a little help from their friends, the Dogs have the easiest path in a while to trot into another championship game.
