Capitals moving forward, concerns?

Mark ButerbaughJan 28, 2010

The Washington Capitals are cruising forward at mach speed, hitting stride on an 8 game winning streak, the franchise's longest since 1989.  Further, they are doing it by spreading around scoring with 9 (Ovechkin, Semin, Backstrom, Fleischman, Laich, Green, Morrison, Knuble, and Fehr) different players in double digits in goals, 1 close to making it 10 (Matt Bradley).  They score plenty.  They win plenty.

But, we all remember last season with such vivid memories.  The Caps take 7 games to dispose of the New York Rangers, then win the first two against Pittsburgh in the Stanley Cup playofffs.  They the Capitals disappeared, dropping 4 straight and exiting themselves from the playoffs.  They were high powered then.  They had a ton of energy then.  They scored a ton then.

Adam Proteau addresses what he believes are concern with the Caps, as they approach the trade deadline.

That said, the Caps’ potential trouble spots aren’t anything to snort derisively at, either. In fact, their potential pitfalls prove how delicate a franchise’s competitive balance has to be for it to ascend to hockey’s ultimate level of greatness.

Questions about Washington’s back end have been hovering over the team ever since the arrival of a superb young core of forwards made moot any questions about their offense; those questions that remain aren’t going away until a Stanley Cup parade has been held in the District of Columbia.

Not a surprise to many of us.  If you would ask any die hard caps fan what the weakness on the roster is, most, by a likely significant m,ajority, would name the blue line.  Well, except may HC Bruce Boudreau, who thinks we have a great blue line.  Heck, even Adam thinks the Caps blue line is good to go if it stays healthy.  Personally, I would love to see the Caps obtain a big gritty, rough, rugged, whateverelseyouwanttodescribeit, defenseman at the deadline.
