Is Mexican Boxing in Jeopardy?
Mexico is widely known for its rich boxing history which has produced boxing legends such as Salvador Sanchez, Julio Cesar Chavez, Erick Morales, Marco Antonio Barrera, Erick Morales, and Juan Manuel Marquez to name a few.
In 2008, Mexico had Antonio Margarito, Juan Manuel Marquez, Edgar Sosa, Christian Mijares, and hot prospects such as Alfredo Angulo to rely on to continue that rich boxing tradition it holds.
However, it has fallen into an unexpected setback.
Letās begin with Christian Mijares.
Christian Mijares was considered at the time one of the smartest pugilists and top ten pound for pound fighters.
Surprisingly, he was knocked out by Vic Darchinyan and followed up with two consecutive losses.
He went from one of boxings best to a āwhere is he now?ā
Similarly, Antonio Margarito was the unofficial No. 1 welterweight after his upset of Miguel Cotto.
More importantly, Margarito was the leading Mexican boxer following his fight with Cotto.
Heck, some were even comparing him to Julio Cesar Chavez.
Although he is nothing like Chavez, Margarito had demonstrated the iron chin, come forward style, balls on the line fighting that had built the stereotype of Mexican fighters.
As a result, he was supposed to follow up 2009 by beating Shane Mosley and moving on to bigger things.
What happened?
Margarito was knocked out and caught tampering with his gloves.
Even hot prospect Alfredo Angulo fell victim and suffered his first loss against
Kermit Cintron.
Even the lighter weight divisions felt the impact.
Edgar Sosa and Ulisses Solis also fell victims and both lost their titles.
Fernando Montiel recently didnāt look too good in his last fight either.
What about Rafael Marquez and Israel Vasquez?
Both were tremendous top 10 fighters before their third encounter.
Unfortunately, their trilogy was so great that it may have taken their prime from them and lowering their elite boxing status.
Despite these setbacks, Mexican still has and will have a bright future.
Juan Manuel Marquez is currently the āNumero Unoā Mexican boxer in my opinion.
Recently he got a golden opportunity to face off with Floyd Mayweather.
However, weight and skills proved too much for Marquez to handle and lost a lopsided decision.
Nevertheless, one must keep in mind Mayweather still remains undefeated and had a weight advantage over Marquez. Also, one must also keep in mind Marquez recent achievements that merit him as one of boxingās elite.
He lost a disputed decision to Pacquiao, moved up in weight and was the first to knock out Joel Casamayor.
He then defended his title against Juan Diaz in a fight of the year candidate.
Despite his age, Marquez may have a brighter future waiting for him in a packed lightweight and Jr.Welterweight divisions. Plus, drinking his own pee might make him younger.
Saul Alvarez is by many to be the future of Mexican Boxing and recently signed with Golden Promotions.
Abner Mares is also another star waiting to make a big impact in the sport.
Angulo is still exciting and has time to polish his skills and may become a champion.
So not everything is grim for Mexican boxing. At the moment it may not have a star that can completely look forward to embody their hopes, dreams, and patriotism. It has bumped into an unexpected void but that will soon be filled because its history and tradition.
Although this article may seem a bit critical, Mexican boxing is still bright and shows a bright future.
