Pro Football Future: Will The NFL Have Any Competition?

Pedro GonzalezJan 26, 2010

After a little research I found out that the NFL and the UFL won't be the only professional football leagues in the near future (and probably you didn't either) so I'm going to tell you what each league is trying to do and how do they plan not to compete with the NFL (cause that would be suicide).

All American Football League (AAFL)

This league started because the founders want to translate the College Football experience into the Pros, each team representing a state (you know the state v.s. state rivalries). They were supposed to start in '07 but it seems like the recession took it's toll on the league and after other postponements it's scheduled to begin this spring.

The AAFL has the perfect plan for them not to compete with the NFL, they became partners. They had the NFL referees oversee during the season and had a deal back in '08 with NFL Network and are pursuing similar deals for 2010 season.

The AAFL has established 6 teams: Alabama, Florida, Arkansas, Michigan, Tennessee & Texas.

United National Gridiron League (UNGL)

The UNGL has a goal and that goal is to give more opportunity to young players to showcase their abilities. They stat the regular season this March if they don't postpone it.

See right now the only possibility for a college player to go pro is the NFL, but the problem is that they only have 32 teams for thousands of players all over the country, so the UNGL is here to help those players who weren't fortunate enough to be on a NFL team. So what the UNGL is trying to do is be a farm-system for the NFL.

The UNGL has announced 8 teams as of Jan. 26: Alabama Blackbirds, Dallas Bluestorm, Georgia Slashers, Louisiana Lancers, Miami Scorchers, North Carolina Comets, Ohio Marauders and Virginia Swarm.

The New United States Football League (USFL)

The New USFL is taking the name from probably the best professional football league that isn't and didn't merge with the NFL. The league's kickoff has been pushed back for a couple of years and now has it's inaugural season planned to start on the spring of 2011.

The league is trying to have 10-12 teams it's first season with some of them having the same names that the old franchises of the old USFL.

For this article I used Wikipedia and checked the info. was accurate with each league's official website and other sites.
