Ireland Lives Again: Sheamus is the Real Deal

Lonn McNamaraJan 25, 2010

The Rise and Fall of Finlay

It's been four long years of grief for the Irish fans of WWE, Finlay was the only pillar that held up Celtic Heritage in WWE, he wore green and black as a tribute to his ancestors. Finlay's Titantron flashed images of the beautiful landscape he called home as his family crest flew into the middle of the screen.

Finlay used a stereotype of "I Love To Fight" which was expressed through the images shown on numerous TV shows where men throw punches at one another because they disagree with something.

Although Finlay showed WWE that he is the Ultimate Veteran of the Squared Circle and that didn't need high flying moves or intense submission holds, but merely the technical style of a true athelete that celebrated his knowledge of Irish Wrestling.

On May 26 2006, Finlay was faced with the character of Hornswoggle who is a walking, talking and breathing insult to Irish Mythology. Hornswoggle is acceptable only when they have him used correctly, Dylan Postl was born in Wisconsin which was another downfall for the character.

In 2008 Finlay was ripped of his advanced technical wrestling and replaced with winning matches with his "son" Hornswoggle destracting the opponent while he strikes them with a Shillelagh (A Shillelagh is used in WWE correctly as it is an actual weapon).

WWE hasn't given Finlay any major pushes in 10 years and made the highlight of his career The WM-23 Money In The Bank match. I would like to see Finlay the World Heavyweight Champion before he retires.

Sheamus Arrives

In 2009 Sheamus was moved from Florida Championship Wrestling into WWE for a second go at super-stardom, within three months the Celtic Warrior had shown that Irish Mythology is a major influence on his fighting style, ring gear and personal lifestyle. Sheamus was mocked for his pale skin and hair colour, but he didn't give in to pressure and went on to dominate Raw with the exact same attitude which would eventually create history.

History was Written in His Face

On December 1, Sheamus kept a promise he made to his ancestors and his country—he won the WWE Championship at TLC to become the first Irish-born Champion in WWE history. This amazing accomplishment did not change the Celtic Warrior, but merely gave him the advantage as he went on to further dominate Raw and force his way through Evan Bourne, John Cena and maybe even Randy Orton in the Royal Rumble.
