Lebron James To The Clippers? Not Such a Crazy Idea
When Lebron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers eked out a road win at the L.A. Clippers on Saturday, it got one LA beat writer thinking why King James suiting up with the serfs of the NBA is not such a bad idea after all.
Lebron's impending free agency will be the story of the sports worldĀ this summer. It has been widely believed that James will leave Cleveland in the dust for the Knicks and Broadway or even the New Jersey swamp and the Nets. Heck, even Lebron's new shoe had to cause sweaty palms on the shores of Lake Erie.
Instead of the Big Apple, could Lebron actually make a left turn and head for the West Coast to try to build an empire in the same building currently housing Kobe Bryant? As JA Adande writes, the Clippers have enough emerging young talent to enter the discussion.
The Clippers won't be selling bare cabinets and have the flexibility to offer Lebron a $100-million contract, similar to any deal he would get from either the Knicks, Nets, or Miami Heat.
Sure, the Clippers brand has scared away many free agents, but this is Lebron James. He alone made the previously also-ran Cavaliers a perennial NBA Finals contender. The argument is slim in believing he wouldn't do the same for the Clippers.
The competition is unquestionably tougher in the Western Conference, but he instantly makes the Clippers appealing for future free agents thinking of Los Angeles as a destination.
Lebron will have a tough choice to make. Will he leave the only home he's ever known?Ā
If he is serious about growing his brand on a global scale and believes Cleveland does not provide the means to do it, the Clippers are as wise a choice as any. Only Lebron knows the answer. But who knows, maybe we will see Jack Nicholson planted courtside for the Clippers in the near future.
