Dear Buffalo Bills: Why Have You Hired Chan Gailey As Your Next Head Coach?

Old AccountJan 19, 2010

After months of searching for the next head coach, the Buffalo Bills have found their man. Chan Gailey, former head coach of the Dallas Cowboys in the late 90's, was the man who Buffalo turns to.

As I saw this news break, I was in some surprise of the hire. With the interest in Bill Cowher and Mike Shanahan, for them to turn to Gailey astonishes me. But then I begin to think to myself: why was this hire made?

There were much better options out there, which lincludes Leslie Frazier and Jason Garrett.

Frazier, the current defensive coordinator of the Minnesota Vikings, has been rumored of multiple head coaching positions, including the Seattle Seahawks. Losing out on the Seattle job to Pete Carrol, you would figure Frazier would be out at some point.

After the great defensive performance Frazier's defense put together in the 34-3 blowout of Dallas, it was looking as if Frazier would be the next head coach at Buffalo. In suprising fashion, though, he did not receive the job.

Frazier may not have been the offensive mind Buffalo was looking for, but does bring an interesting strategy on the defensive side of the ball. Besides, the previous defensive coordinator in Minnesota was Mike Tomlin, who won a Super Bowl title with Pittsburgh already. Thus, head coach Josh Childress does have the edge of finding good defensive minds, and one who can be successful in the future.

Jason Garrett, the offensive coordinator of the Dallas Cowboys, should have been a head coach over Gailey. If Buffalo is desperate for an offensive minded coach, how come the job wasn't given to Garrett.

Not only did he put together a Cowboys offense that had an ability to score at will, he was also a factor in the development of quarterback Tony Romo.

So I must ask Ralph Wilson, owner of the Buffalo Bills. What about Chan Gailey did you have confidence in of bringing this franchise back to the post season. Should we discount the 0-2 playoff record as a head coach, even with pretty good talent in Dallas?

Come on Ralph, it looked as if you were going to find a decent replacement to run this low franchise that still has a very supportive fan base. Instead, your bound to see another failure of a head coach, and will see more losing seasons before realizing it's time to find a true head coach to run this franchise.
