UConn Huskies Fall Further into a January Slump

Daniel DinunzioJan 18, 2010

The UConn Huskies continue on a downward spiral. Currently the Huskies stand at 11-6, and 2-3 in the Big East conference.

Connecticut is losers of three straight games with yesterday's loss at Michigan, leaving a lot of unanswered questions surrounding how to solve its problems.

UConn is ranked 340 out of 344 teams in college basketball when it comes to three point field goals per game. The little perimeter game UConn has is non-existent, and after shooting 1-11 for beyond the arc yesterday it's only getting worse.

Jerome Dyson sat on the bench for 17 minutes in the first half with two fouls. With him nowhere to be found, Michigan took advantage and went into halftime up 11 at home.

To UConn's credit, they fight and comeback when double digit deficits face them. They fell behind Kentucky 12-0, were down 8 to Pittsburgh, and were behind as many as 14 in yesterday's loss.

UConn lacks offensive scoring production up front.Ā  Alex Oriahki has had a minimal impact on offense, and Atar Majok has never looked totally comfortable down low in the paint.

Even Stanley Robinson continues to be a non-factor at different parts of the game.Ā  When he goes missing, UConn suffers because of the offensive output he is capable of producing.

One of the few bright spots on the team has been Gavin Edwards.Ā  Although Edwards comes off the bench he plays the minutes as if he is a starter. Yesterday he played a career high 37 minutes and scored 14 points.

Once again, UConn's free throw shooting was dismal. It has continually put them in a tough position in tight games. When UConn plays strong opponents, it falters at the free throw line it is only penalizes themselves further.

UConn is at it's best when it can get out and run in transition. The only problem is that teams have focused on getting back on defense forcing UConn to set up its half court offense.

This is where the Huskies have struggled to score points. Kemba Walker lacks the focus and skill to be an elite point guard in college basketball. The loss of A.J. Price to the NBA has shown how much of an impact he had on Walker.

Jim Calhoun is not getting through to his players. UConn fights hard and never has thrown in the towel, but it's having a hard time getting wins.

UConn shouldn't be ranked this week. They don't deserve to and all season many people believed this team was no where near as good as advertised.

The NCAA Tournament Selection Committee isn't going look at Connecticut's close losses.Ā  It wants to see wins, and how the Huskies compete in the Big East.

Right now, both look questionable and this team needs to step its game up.

With No. 1 Texas coming to Storrs Saturday afternoon, it's only continuing to get more difficult.

The Huskies need to get back to reality or else the only selection committee calling their name on Selection Sunday will be the NIT.
