Duke Dodged Rocky Top's Bullet, But Is Still Vulnerable
Duke University... The last coach to lead them to an ACC Championship was Steve Spurrier. Yea, the same one.
Their latest coach is one that was doing something that they hadn't done since the Ol' Ball Coach was in Duke Blue, win. Now, let's not get crazy. They didn't win the ACC, weren't in bowl contention, and really had a down season, but things are starting to turn around in Durham.
Since David Cutcliffe stepped into the door the Devils have won nine games. That may not seem impressive, but if you combine the five years prior they had only won eight. They were THE worst D1 football team in America.
All week long Coach Cut was reported to be leaving the good guys and heading to Team Rocky Top in Tennessee. Luckily for the Duke faithful he is staying put.
It is a great thing that he stayed. The team rests squarely on his shoulders. For the first time in a long time, he has people excited about pigskin on the this side of Tobacco Road.
The move to stay at Duke shocked a lot of key people in the media and to be honest it should scare every Duke fan.
Sure, Cut stayed away from TN, but he is not the coach of the future for this team. He is going to break a lot of hearts one day in the next few years.
He is going to grow this team, and lead them to a bowl game (maybe even next year). Then a powerhouse school is going to swoop him right out from under the Blue Devils' feet. They will not be able to do anything about it either.
Duke may have dodges Rocky Top's bullet this time around, but it is only a matter of time before this guy walks out the front door!
