Celebrities and Their Role at Wrestlemania

It's the start of the new year and we are now on the road to Wrestlemania. One thing that's synonymous with Wrestlemania is the involvement of celebrities at the event.

I can't help but ask the question 'should celebrities play a greater role than they should at the event?' I know that the inclusion of celebrities is a way for the WWE to create greater interest in the event and make it appeal to a mainstream audience. Don't get me wrong, I am not opposed to celebrities appearing at the event. What I don't like is celebrities taking too much airtime and making top wrestlers look weak.

I will start with last year's Wrestlemania. I personally didn't like Mickey Rourke's appearance at WM25. I felt his presence was good in the lead up to event with Jericho and his feud the veterans. After seeing an amazing bout, particularly when Jericho and Steamboat wrestling, and then Jericho disposing of 4 quality veterans in flair, steamboat, snuka and piper, we see Jericho go down to a piss weak punch from Rourke. To me this made Jericho and the veterans look weak.

Another thing at WM25 was Kid Rock's performance. This performance went on for too long. With the time spent on this they could've shown the tag team title match. Instead it was a dark match that wasn't aired. Wouldn't it make sense to show the match? I mean this was the unification of the tag titles. Shouldn't this be a memorable match seeing the inaugural champions being crowned?

Other examples include Lawrence Taylor's win over Bam Bam Bigelow. Bigelow was at the time a monster heel demolishing quality opponents. Then to see him lose to an opponent with limited to no wrestling skills was pathetic and made him look weak. Come on! being finished off with a double axe handle.

In conclusion, I am not opposed to seeing celebrities at Wrestlemania. In fact I really enjoyed it when Mike Tyson appeared at WM14. He was great for the build up and feud with Austin. He was an enforcer and didn't wrestle, thus didn't wrestle and make anyone look weak which was a wise move. What I don't like is seeing celebrities taking too much time from showcasing better things at the event and wrestling or fighting others when they don't have the skills or experience in the ring to do so. If McMahon wants them at the event to create interest then by all means do so, but don't give them roles at the expense of other wrestlers' credibility.

My next issue is regarding the induction of celebrities into the hall of fame. But we'll leave that for another time and article
