Auburn Football: Gene Chizik Era, NSD Recruiting Update

Kevin McGradyJan 14, 2010

If anyone did not believe Gene Chizik means business, then maybe the 2010 Auburn recruiting class will convince them. This will be the last in this series of recruiting updates for this year. The reason is the recruiting has mostly been done. The Auburn staff are simply adding frosting to the cake at this point.

The following recruits have already signed and can now be considered Auburn Tigers.

Cameron Newton (quarterback), Roszell Gayden (offensive tackle), Brandon Mosley (offensive tackle), Joel Bonomolo (defensive end, spring transfer verbal only), Craig Sanders (defensive end), Jessel Curry (full back/linebacker)

I will list below the rest of the commitments that have verbally committed to Auburn.Ā

Line Backers

Ladarius Owens, Jake Holland, Jawara White

Cornerbacks

Jonathan Mincy, Chris Davis (plays several positions), Ryan White

Safety

Demetruce McNeal

Punter

Steven Clark

Kicker

Cody Parkey

Defensive End

Justin DeLaine

Defensive Tackle

Kenneth Carter

Offensive Line

Chad Slade, Shon Coleman, Ed Christian, Eric Mack

Tight End

Dakota Mosley

Running Back

Michael Dyer, D.J. Howard (plays several positions)

Wide Receiver

Travon Reed, Jeremy Richardson, Antonio Goodwin, Shaun Kitchens (plays several positions)

This gives the Auburn Tigers 27 coming orĀ committed for this class.

There are five slots left to fill for the 2010 class. I will put my ear to the ground and predict how some of that remaining five might look next.

Marcus Lattimore (Running Back): I think he is an Auburn Tiger by February 3. It simply makes sense. Why would a young man with certain NFL potential sign with a team with a passing offense that has not been known to turn out running backs to the NFL?

Why would this same young man go to play for a pass first offense at a team known for converting their excess running backs into linebackers? The other option he has listed is Auburn. A school that just sent another running back, in a long series of successes, to the NFL.

While young men are prone to whims, Marcus Lattimore is cut from a different mold. He will not risk losing millions later to pacify a whim. Auburn is the logical choice and I believe this young man will make the logical decision.Ā

Jeff Whitaker (Defensive Line): I think he comes to Auburn to play early and often. The Auburn strength and conditioning program will make him the best he can be to compete for a spot at the next level.Ā

Corey Lemonier, Byran Jones, are viable names for the last two slots.

Surprises for Signing Day

Shon Coleman has been somewhat speculative in his commitment. It would be a huge mistake for him to bolt, but it could happen.

Victor Beasley, Eric Russel, Lach Seastrunk (Set to announce his commitment January 27 in the afternoon)and others are still interested. It will be down to the wire for those last two slots.

For National Signing Day coverage I highly recommend:

http://www.wareagleauburn.com/index.php

If you want to use them on signing day you must sign up prior to February 3. It is free and it is as accurate for information as any pay site. This is advice for Auburn fans only. This site does not cover other teams.Ā

This will be my last major recruiting update for this season. I will edit and post minor updates as they occur on this article.
