Should The Bears Trade Cutler? A Scenario That Makes Sense
The Bears need some sort of drastic change in order to be competitive not only next year, but in the years beyond. The first, most obvious, and best option would have
been to clean out the coaches. Even better, dump Angelo too. How many years have we drafted "projects" that did not see the field their rookie years? What other professional football organization does this year after year? I could go on and on on this topic but since the front office and coaches have been roasted in the media I'll move onto the other way to implement drastic change and improve the Bears.
Trade Jay Cutler.
Now, before you jump all over me, I am a Cutler fan. I think he has all the tools to be a pro bowl quarterback every year for the next 5-8 years. The problem is it won't happen here. Last season was a complete waste, this upcoming season will be a waste with the current coaching debacle unfolding in front of our eyes, which completely takes away from two years of his prime. I don't blame Cutler for any of this. He tried to make the most with the hand he had been dealt, sometimes too much, and the results were not up to our, or his, standards. So we can keep putting him out there behind center every week or we can admit this was a bold move that just isn't going to pan out.
There are alot of teams in the NFL that would love to have Culter as their franchise quarterback, but not too many that are in the right position to bring him in. Actually, I can only think of one team that should jump at the chance of bringing Jay Culter over in a trade: the Philadelphia Eagles.
The Eagles should be more than willing to deal McNabb (and possible a draft pick as well) for Cutler. Philadelphia has a team loaded with young talent at wide receiver (Jackson and Macklin) and running back (McCoy). Parting with their perpetually embattled quarterback for younger franchise caliber quarterback makes sense. If the salary cap is an issue, they can afford to let the oft-injured Brian Westbrook go as his replacement is already there. This moves makes sense for them, but does it make sense for the Bears?
The Bears would get a Chicago guy, McNabb, and potentially a much needed draft pick. McNabb had played with inexperienced wide recievers before and done well and Forte is still a high caliber back if we can piece together a legit offensive line in front of him. So the Bears get McNabb, draft an O-lineman or two and possible bring in another through free agency. If anything this won't make the Bears any worse and gives the Bears the flexibility moving forward to make the moves necessary to be competitive again.
Just something to think about.
