Florida Marlins to Increase Spending

Tyler BlouinJan 13, 2010

The perennial low budget Florida Marlins have reachedย anย agreementย with the players' union to increase spending. The agreement comes on the heels of complaintsย that the team payroll being so low it violates MLB's revenue-sharing provisions. The exact amount of the payroll increase is still unclear.

The new agreements runs through 2012, when the Marlins plan toย open a new retractable roof stadium in Miami. The basic intention is for revenue-sharing funds to be spend on improving the team by signing new players and retaining current players. After both of the Marlins World Series championships, the teams were gutted via trades and players walking through free agency. While the Marlins has remained competitive, finishing 2nd last season in the NL East and ahead of the high budget New York Mets, the players' union had stepped in to keep the Marlins from letting players walk after their contracts finish with the team
