Pacquiao vs. Mayweather: How Leveled Was The Playing Field?

Gilbert AguilarJan 12, 2010

The fight between the two biggest names in boxing is dead, but who is to blame?

Everybody has an opinion, and few have been shy about pinning the blame on either Team Pacquiao or Team Mayweather, but the main reason for the fight being called off was because Pacquiao refused to give in to Mayweather's demands to have Olympic style drug testing in order to ensure a level playing field. How level was the playing field?

Billing: Mayweather asked in the contract for the fight to be billed as MAYWEATHER VS PACQUAIO, which Manny agreed to. Now, correct me if I am wrong, but shouldn't the defending champion, who also happens to be ranked pound-for-pound the number one fighter in the world be first? I guess Manny didn't care as much as Floyd.

Site: The fight was to take place at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Pacquiao was not only to fight an American boxer in his country, but in the city Mayweather calls home. Seems only fair right? I mean Mayweather didn't even give his team the opportunity to visit Dallas Stadium; he wanted to fight in Vegas.

But the reason the fight was called off, was because Floyd demanded something never demanded by another fighter. Floyd wanted Olympic-style drug testing, and Manny refused. Pacquiao's excuse was that having his blood drawn weakened him, and according to many he blamed his loss to Morales on blood drawing he did days before the match.

Eventually Pacquiao agreed to have his blood drawn at the start of training camp, 24 days before the March 13 fight, and right after the fight. Seems fair for a fighter who has some mental issues with having his blood drawn, right? Wrong. It wasn't enough for Mayweather. He played hard to get, and eventually Pacquiao called his bluff and moved on.

Then Mayweather, who had been letting his team do all the talking, comes out to blame Pacquiao for ending the fight.

Mayweather refused something as simple as getting weight before a fight, which he had a right to, since it's not a requirement. Yet, he blamed Manny for not getting his blood drawn, which is also not required by the Nevada Athletic Commission.

Mayweather has to stop and think before making demands. He was the one that needed to make this fight happen. He is the one who has something to prove. He was the challenger. Manny gave him a chance, and he blew it by trying to get his way like he always does.
