Assembling Lane Kiffin's Coaching Staff at USC

Michael SchotteyJan 12, 2010

Lane Kiffin has just accepted the head coaching position at the University of Southern California after one year at the University of Tennessee.

While the servers at Bleacher Report will be on overload with articles about how despicable many will feel this decision was, let's take a moment and dissect what could be a star studded staff.

Head Coach: Lane Kiffin

Long before the recruiting violations, the smack talk, the arrogance, etc., Lane Kiffin was considered a young mastermind of the offensive game—taking over the reigns at USC in 2005.

Offensive Coordinator: Norm Chow

The job is his according to ESPN . Away from the USC limelight, Chow clashed with Jeff Fisher in Tennessee and isn't relevant at UCLA with offensive ace, Rick Neuheisel.

QB Coach: Paul Hackett

Currently has the same gig under Tom Cable in Oakland, but that job might not be around much longer.

Why move? Hackett is a proven offensive coach with large ties to USC, coaching there for five seasons.

OL Coach: Pat Ruel

The current incumbent has coached the OL at USC since 2005. He has the connections to California recruiting and the pro game that the program needs.

Tennessee OL coach James Cregg is a real possibility here as well.

RB Coach: Todd McNair

His current status is up in the air. He's not going to Seattle but he might not be staying in Los Angeles either. USC would do well to keep him. His success is unquestionable. And, he's also worked extensively with special teams.

WR Coach: James Lofton

Considered a possibility for the head coaching position, Lofton is another star who has spent most of a long playing and coaching career on the west coast.

TE Coach/Recruiting Assistant: Brennan Carroll

Yes, that is Pete Carroll's son who has been an offensive assistant at USC since 2002. He's helped Fred Davis, Dominique Byrd, and Anthony McCoy reach the NFL and took over the recruiting coordinator title in recent years.

Lane and Brennan have known each other for years and Kiffin would gladly "babysit."

Defensive Coordinator: Monte Kiffin

This one is already in place as well. The "Tampa Two" is moving westward after Tennessee served as a training ground for its success in the college ranks. Kiffin doesn't have much tread on the tires, but being around his grandson keeps him young.

Associate Head Coach/Defensive Line/Recruiting Coordinator: Ed Orgeron

One of the hotter names in coaching right now after year-long stints with the Saints and Tennessee. He returns to USC in pretty much the same position as in 2004 when he held the same title. He's already taken the job and Trojan Nation should rejoice.

Linebackers Coach: Junior Seau (Dat Nguyen?)

This is my long shot of the group, but a stab in the dark has to be taken somewhere. Ken Norton Jr. was a huge loss for the Trojans, but trading one Junior for another could be a recipe for success.

Seriously, Monte Kiffin is a LB coach by trade, so having one of the NFL's best linebackers under one of the NFL's best defensive coaches has to work. Right?

Secondary Coach: Rocky Seto

One of the anchors in the usually "rocky" weather down at Southern Cal, Seto volunteered in 1999 and hasn't left.

Special Teams Coordinator: Brian Schneider

A great special teams coach who is currently at USC and was also at Oakland with Lane Kiffin. He'll probably get a call up to the NFL again soon enough, but could be coaxed to stay for a few more years.

If Brian Schneider has gone north for greener pastures, Todd McNair can settle into his old job.

This staff is, honestly, a who's-who of coaches. Every single coach understands the legacy, the spectacle, the pressure that comes with coaching the best football team in the nation's second biggest media market.

Most importantly, this coaching staff is good enough, connected enough, and star-studded enough to keep recruits coming in the door amidst reports of sanctions and lost scholarships.

With this coaching staff, the loss of Pete Carroll isn't really a loss at all.
