Alabama Is Your National Champion, Just Deal With It
Jeffrey FannJan 8, 2010
Alabama is this year's 2009 College Football National Champion, and that's the bottom the line. Where ever I went, whatever I watched, or read after the game was an exercise in whining about the Crimson Tide not deserving the national title. I'm not an Alabama fan, I don't even know anyone that went to Alabama, but unless you're Boise St. you don't have anything to complain about.
IĀ heard several media outlets saying today that if Colt McCoy had played Texas would have won the title game. I beg to differ. Alabama could not have played worse early in the game or made a more questionable play call than the 1st quarter fake punt. Combine that with the botched kickoff return that was effectively a turnover, and Texas should have led 14-0. It was only 6-0.
Colt McCoy's injury didn't have anything to do with Alabama rushing for 205 yards either. Heisman trophy winner Mark Ingram had 116 of those. Texas, even with Colt McCoy, probably shouldn't have been in the game anyways. The fact they beat Nebraska in the Big 12 title game was a minor miracle.
Critics went on to say that this Alabama team wasn't simply not very good. That the offense basically got by with a mediocre QB in Greg McElroy. No one said you had to look pretty to win. I'm not saying this Alabama team is one of the best in history. I don't think many people will say they are, but they beat a 10 win Virginia Tech Hokie team, that if you didn't notice just crushed Tennessee in the Chick Fil A bowl.
The Crimson Tide went undefeated in the SEC and whooped Tim Tebow and the Florida Gators in the SEC Championship game. At last count Florida was scoring more than 50 points against Cincinnati in the Sugar Bowl. We all want a playoff or a plus 1 system, but it isn't here in 2009. In 2009 Alabama is the best team in the country just deal with it, well unless you're Boise St.
