Final AP Poll, Broken Down By Team and "Fixed". Any Repeaters?
The last AP poll of this season is in and the final poll almost has as much to debate as the first one did. Let's examine the top 10, put them in their proper places and guess who might repeat next year in the top 10 again.
1. Alabama - Except for Boise State, who could realistically argue this champion. Alabama simply crushed Colt McCoy and Texas' dream of hoisting that ball just as they did Florida. If you beat the number one and two teams in the country in consecutive games to end the season, there is little doubt, Alabama is No. 1.
2. Texas - Really? They needed a generous reply of the time clock just to play in this game and this contest was over in the second quarter in all reality. Only Alabama's ultra conservative play calling made it appear close at one time, but when they need more scores, the Tide simply put their foot back on the gas and finished 16 ahead.
Alabama exposed the Texas number one rushing defense for what is really was, a sham. Not only one, but two running backs eclipsed the 100 yard plateau. For those statistics to mean something, it helps to play teams who can and do actually run the ball.
Since they did do better than Florida even with a backup QB, so put them third in the rankings, not second. One close call and generous time clock management and a beat down even with your starting QB on the bench doesn't beat an undefeated team.
3. Florida - The total beat down inflicted upon this team by Alabama in no way qualifies them to be placed ahead of an undefeated Boise State.
Though they MAY beat them in a head to head showdown, we'll never know. All we do know is that Boise State finished undefeated and beat another undefeated team in a BCS Bowl, therefore, Florida should be forth.
4. Boise State - You just read why I believe this team was screwed over. They are a quality undefeated team and deserve to be treated like it.
This "dismissal" of Boise State only adds fuel to fire for Congress to look into something more "fair", and we all know how fair politicians are.
Boise State should be Second.
5. Ohio State - Really? Are you serious? A two loss team who finished strong is not who I would have in the top five.
TCU played well enough to secure a top five finish by going undefeated into a BCS Bowl Game.
Ohio State are like cockroaches, you just can't get rid of them can you? Ohio State should be eighth. However, the press just loves Ohio State.
6. TCU - Though they had a letdown that last game, they did go into the BCS Bowl Series undefeated and deserve to be rated against a two loss team, and those losses to worse teams than Boise State.
Again, the little guy gets screwed. TCU should be fifth.
7. Iowa - They lost two games with Ricky Stanzi on the bench, but with him on the field they would have won both. The fact they took Ohio State to overtime with a firstĀ time starting QB says a lot about this team.
Their bowl win was a Ga. Tech and that vaunted running attack proved they are one of the best teams in the country.
I put them ahead of a one loss Cincinnati and think they should have been rated as the 6th best team in America.
8.Ā Cincinnati - Here you have to throw away that logic that an undefeated team going into a BCS Bowl should be ranked ahead of a two loss team. There is little doubt that Iowa would win that contest.
But they did have coaching distractions and more to hurt them and they did have a good run undefeated through the regular season. Cincinnati should be the seventh best team in the nation.
9. Penn State - Is just where they should be. Joe Paterno proves age is just a number and finished in the top ten for umpteenth time in his storied career. A flat game against Ohio State cost them dearly, but beating LSU proved they were really big time afer all.
Penn State is the ninth best team in the nation.
10. Va. Tech - Frank Beamer lands his boys in the last spot in the top 10 and it's a well deserved place to be despite the three losses, one of which was against Alabama, the top team in the country.
They are clearly the best of the three loss teams and the beat down of Tennessee, even though unranked in the bowls, was impressive.
Tho polls got this one right too. Va. Tech is the No. 10 team in the nation.
Alabama should start next season as Florida did this year, at the top of the heap and with most of their players coming back, they might just finish at the top again.
Texas will start the post Colt McCoy years and should be vulnerable to other members of the Big 12 and as we've seen in bowl games. Best guess, they will finish in the top 10 again and should Florida, even without Tebow.
And if you think Boise State is going away anytime soon, think again. They will return. Iowa and Penn State look to lead the Big 10 and will return and that leaves no room for Ohio State in the top 10.0
The other BCS buster wannabees, Cincinnati and TCU will be a mixed bag. Look for TCU to return and and Cincinnati to fall away.Ā Brian Kelley jumped ship just in time.
And lastly never bet against Frank Beamer and Va. Tech being outside the top 10. They will return. That's eight of the top 10 teams returning.
