Clottey will substitute for Mayweather?

It seems like the fight is off between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao.

To be honest, I still have a gut feeling the fight will be made. Yes, call me delusional or whatever you like, but the fight is too huge not to be made.

Nevertheless, Pacquiao's trainer Freddie Roach has just informed ESPN's Brian Kenny that Manny Pacquiao is now scheduled to face Joshua Clottey.

I verified in BoxRec, and apparently the fight between Pacquiao and Clottey is official.

The fight is scheduled to take place March 13, 2010 at the MGM Grand. Essentially, everything has stayed the same except Mayweather has been substituted for Clottey.

Despite all this, Clottey stated that he has yet to receive a contract or information from Pacquiao’s camp.

To be honest, the fight is not a bad one. But anything less than Mayweather vs. Pacquiao is a spit to boxing in my opinion.

So will Mayweather follow suit and substitute his opponent with the likes of Malignaggi or Foreman?

Let’s hope all these are just rumors and both fighters continue negotiations.

Perhaps Pacquiao and Roach are bluffing to get Mayweather to back off his demands of “Olympic-style drug testing?"

Pacquiao vs. Clottey

So let’s assume the fight between Clottey and Pacquiao goes on as planned.

Who wins?

Clottey is by no means a pushover or a “tune-up” fighter.

He gave Miguel Cotto and Antonio Margarito everything they could handle. Some even believe he could have beaten both had he not broken his hand (Margarito fight) and had he been more active in the final rounds (Cotto fight).

Plus at this point, Pacquiao has more to lose than Clottey does.

Pacquiao is considered the best fighter in the world, and everything could come crashing down with a loss to Clottey.

I am not implying he will lose, but Clottey is a very live underdog.

At this point anything can happen; maybe Mayweather will sign a fight with Cotto in a couple of days?
