Alabama-Texas: Unstoppable Force Met an Immovable Object

Larry BurtonJan 7, 2010

Tonight's BCS Championship Game was called a meeting of an unstoppable force, Alabama's offense, meeting an immovable object, the Texas defense. The problem with that billing was that the same could be said for the opposite team's offenses and defenses.

In the first quarter, Texas proved that Alabama could be stopped and when the chips were down with a fake punt interception and a short kickoff that was recovered, that the Texas offense could be stopped as well and was held for two field goals.

Then everyone in orange took a deep breath when Colt McCoy left the game early from being hit by one of the Crimson Tide's immovable objects. He left the field for x-rays and the hopes of the Longhorns left with him.

The Alabama offensive line, which was so adept at protecting McElroy all season, was porous and allowed McElroy to be sacked and hurried for almost the entire first quarter. Then with less than two minutes to go, the Alabama juggernaut finally came to life with runs from three different backs and the first completion to Julio Jones.

The beginning of the second quarter proved to be the end of Texas thinking they could stop thisĀ  unstoppable force. With McCoy gone, so was the Texas offense and like a shark smelling blood in the water, Alabama went for the kill.

The result was 24 second quarter points and by halftime, the Longhorns' chances of winning were as dead as Colt McCoy's right shoulder.

Alabama seemed content for the rest of the game to prove they could live up to the billing as the nation's best defense and to call off the dogs on offense and simply run the clock and hurry to the victory celebration.

Texas did manage to hit Shipley for their one and only touchdown of the evening to close the gap to 24 to 13, Alabama was entering the forth quarter which it has dominated all year.

With Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram on the sideline, the Texas defense proved they couldn't even stop the backup running back, Trent Richardson, and the Longhorns' defense made some uncharacteristic penalties to both move Alabama into field goal range where Tiffin also uncharacteristically missed a 52 yard field goal and to allow Alabama to run the clock.

With 11 minutes left in the game and down by two scores, now was the time for Texas to find an answer. Alabama could kill the remaining clock with two more possessions of their own.

Running five minutes off the clock, this is just what Texas did. The resulting score made it 24-21 and gave Texas hope.

Now it was time for Greg McElroy and the Alabama offense to put the game away once and for all. For one last time it was up to this class to show what they could do.

The offense didn't get the movement they needed, but the resulting fumble the defense caused gave the ball to Alabama, first and goal on the three yard line. Alabama had two running plays, bringing the ball to the one and the clock to two minutes and change.

Though a late touchdown following an Arenas interception made the score look more unbalanced than it was for much of the game, the outcome wasn't in doubt since the second quarter.

Alabama claimed it's 13th National Championship and there was nothing for Nick Saban to do but dry off and Alabama to finally celebrate taking the process to the ultimate end.
