Texas, Please Win, Just To Shut Up the SEC
There is one very good reason to root for Texas tonight, even for those of us who are not Longhorn fans.
Sure, the Longhorns have struggled through most of the season and should have lost to Nebraska in the Big 12 title game.
Sure, A&M and Tech both showed that the Longhorns' defense can not stop a decent offense.
Sure, both Nebraska and Oklahoma showed that the Horns can't move the ball on a good defense.
And yes, the Big 12 sucked this year and was really a Big One+11 this season.
At the same time, Bama played a real schedule (outside of the three cupcakes) with real opponents, finishing off with a masterful win over Saint Tebow and his Gators.
Bama has an amazing defense and a great rushing attack.
Bama should win and is rightfully favored.
Even with all of this, I am forced to support the Horns tonight, even though I think the Horns do not deserve to play in this game and are not even the best team in Texas.
Simply put, I am sick and tired of the hyping of the SEC as if fans of Vandy and Mississippi State and Kentucky have anything to do with the SEC's BCS titles (except to be doormats).
Honestly, the SEC basically is the south rising again and challenging the rest of the nation on the field of honor.
For the SEC fans, they have a mistaken belief that even if their own team sucks, they can root for another SEC team and receive validation. As if an Auburn fan should be able to root for Bama tonight.
SEC fans claim that the conference is just so tough, even though only three of twelve teams had a winning record in conference. In their last 32 conference games, Florida and Alabama have only one loss between them.
The truth is, the SEC is a very top heavy conference with two excellent teams and a bunch of average ones after that.
But we are required to hear the B.S. about the greatness of the SEC all year long.
Well, for this reason and this reason alone, I am hoping that Texas rolls up Bama like Utah rolled up Bama last year.
So, for one day and one day only, I am holding my nose and rooting for the Burnt Orange. I will worship at the altar of Bevo and sing the praises of Mack Brown.
I will forget how average the Horns have been all season and how they have one of the weakest schedules among major programs.Ā
Of course, Boise just showed that having a weak schedule and playing down to your competition does not mean that your team is average. It just means that your team has not been challenged.
So, go Texas! Smack down the Tide!Ā
Please, just so we do not have to hear another year of the hype regarding the greatness of the SEC.
