Alabama vs. Texas: Auburn's James Willis Big Part in National Title Run
I'll admit, part of me wishes nothing but the best for the kids who will play against the Longhorns this Thursday. The fact that it is Auburn's hated arch-rival almost makes me queasy just thinking about it.
Regardless, there is one poignant fact that made me realize there is a way for Auburn fans to root for Alabama without feeling shame.
That is current Alabama associate head coach and outside linebackers coach James Willis.Ā
For those who don't know, Willis is a former Auburn player and linebackers coach for the Tigers. He was released after former head coach Tommy Tuberville resigned, asked to stay on after Chizik was hired, but was hired by Alabama head coach Nick Saban.Ā
The move made some people uneasy about Willis. The thought of leaving Auburn to coach at Alabama is about as bad as it could get in the state to some people.Ā
Nevertheless, it has been no question that Willis has been a key part to Alabama's championship season. The development of the linebackers, especially where he concentrates on the outside, has helped Alabama to the position that they are in today.
As much success as he has had in his short time with the Tide, it is his ties back to Auburn that has made him what he is today.
"I go from one year not having a job to the next year playing in the national championship game,'' Willis said at the BCS Championship Game media day. "Things work out for the best. You have to trust in God that heāll do the right thing for you."
"Auburn is still my school. Itās my home. Itās never gonna change who I am. It made me who I am. Thatās something Iām thankful for. I would hope theyād (Auburn fans) understand that. Iām in the position that I am now because of Auburn."
So, for all the Auburn fans looking for a reason to cheer on the Tide, look no further than Willis.Ā
Even as the Tide makes its push for a 13th title, Auburn will be represented in the title game well by Willis.
