College Football, Rankings/List

Arguments abound concerning which team is the best of any decade. In the eight completed seasons of the 21st century, we have seen an ebb and flow of success among the top programs.

Judging by winning percentage alone, rather than a more subjective tool, we offer this view into the world of the decade's 10 best major-college teams.

10) Auburn      75-27, 74%- A tie between these two schools once star-crossed

Louisville    74-26, 74%  in a coach replacement soap opera.

9)  Va Tech      79-25, 76%- Winning without Vick Brothers through the years.

8)  Miami          76-23, 77%- The most dominant outfit in early part of decade.

7)  Georgia       80-23, 78%- Richt has second strongest team without title in era.

5)  Sou Cal       81-21, 79%- A tie between these two schools who seem to have

LSU            82-22, 79%   spent the entire decade eyeing each other.

4)  Ohio State   81-20, 80%- Does well against Big-10 opponents each year.

3)  Texas         85-17,  83%- Tremendous success during entire decade.

1)  Oklahoma    90-17,  84%- A tie but Broncos beat Oklahoma on a neutral

1)  Boise State  86-16,  84%- site when they played so they go first in line.

Boise State is shockingly the team of the decade, in a tie with Oklahoma, when you go by winning percentage. The Broncos have been consistent. They are the strongest team in win percentage not to have a national title during this era.

For their part, No. 3 Texas has been stout all along and the Longhorns produced the most exciting player in Vince Young, and they won the most thrilling game with the duel in the Rose Bowl for the national championship with SoCal.

If you go by who has won the most BCS championships, then LSU is the best team, as no other team has more than one. Miami was dominant in the early years but has fallen on hard times, which results in them dropping down the list.

SoCal has several Heisman-Trophy winners and put together a long winning-streak, so they deserve consideration under those guidelines.

But this is a listing by winning percentage, and the winner is Boise State and Oklahoma, with Texas chasing both.

  1. To say that Boise State has been the "Best" program this decade is incorrect. Yes they have the best winning percentage, however look at the conference they play in... Both LSU and USC deserve strong consideration for the top spot, especially when you look at their Bowl Records and the quality of the teams they have defeated.

  2. The article says the team with the best winning percentage is the Boise State Broncos(along with Oklahoma) and we're all going to have to live with it. Going by winniong percentage allows us to be objective, everyone plays by the same rules and takes out the subjective analysis of "who plays in what conference, who plays what schedule, who was ranked higher". We are dealing solely with winning percentage and the team with the best winning percentage is Boise St, along with Oklahoma.

Yes Andrew, you have good points on the LSU and Sou Cal, and I look forward to hearing from the Ohio State folks as well.

  3. It's got to be LSU, from "the MIGHTY" SEC conference. They have the hardware to back it up, got a gamblin', ramblin', gunslinger of a Coach in Les and no matter who they lose they always yearly reload. Plus got to add points for him turning down Michigan. Which was rumored to have been for more money than what he currently makes at LSU. Their Auburn game will live on in history, like the Cal banding running on the field or Flutie's "Hail Mary" pass.

    1. well "currently" at the time.

now miles is one of the 5 highest paid coaches in the country.

  4. The pass play call versus the Mississippi River Boat Gambler Tuberville and his Plainsmen was one of the greatest calls of the current century and will be looked back upon as a champion making moment. In fact I would rank it behind only the Statue of Liberty call of Boist State that allowed them to defeat Oklahoma in the 2006 season Fiesta Bowl featuring the two teams with the highest winning percentage of the current century.

  5. I loved article! The point of football is to "play to win the game" (Herm Edwards), and Boise has done that enough, regardless of conference. It's not their fault they play in the Weak Ass Conference. The list is great, and Oklahoma is right there with Boise, its really a great list. Baby Tate was right with the Statue of Liberty play. Still tremendous article.

  6. You asked for it, and here it is. Since Ohio State has played for, oh lets see here, 3 national titles thus far. Come January, that will be 4 making it three in a row. I'm not saying the Buckeyes are the best, but they at least deserve #2. Making this list off of winning percentage is not as fair as it seems because of the differences between the conferences. The real list should be determined by bowl game appearances.

  7. Going by winning percentage is only objective if the teams have all played the same opposition. As it stands, Boise State does have the best winning percentage but have won many games against inferior opposition. I am an Ohio State Fan, but they do not deserve either of the top two spots, because they have won many games against low ranking Big Ten teams... LSU has 2 National Championships and play against High Quality SEC opponents regularly, while USC has five Bowl wins in 6 consecutive BCS Bowl games.

Winning Percentage is not objective in evaluating college football teams.

  8. It is a measure. And the measure I'm using for this article. It is totally objective as each team plays by the same rule of winning percentage. Oklahoma ties them in winning percentage and surely no one would claim the Sooners play a weak schedule. And yet the one time both teams met on neutral field Boise State beat them. So, case closed.

In addition, remember that Sou Cal lost to a 40 point underdog last season. You can't go around claiming you're the best if you're losing to 40 point underdogs. Let's stay away from totally subjective statements like " I am a fan of..." and ," LSU plays against high quality opponents", "Boise St DOES have the best winning percentage BUT".
