Boise State Wins Fiesta Bowl: Making a Case for Broncos as National Champions
So, BSU just pulled off a massive upset. Now we all know that there is (unfortunately) little likelihood that BSU will garner any serious consideration for a national championship.
Despite the fact that in the 2008 and 2009 seasons, Boise State went 26-1. Their one loss? To TCU last year.
TCU has a solid resume and the fact that Boise State beat them is incredible Let's look at TCU's entire schedule, and analyze it. Is the team that beat them worthy of No. 1 consideration?
TCU's Schedule and Results
TCU 30, at Virginia 14 (3-8)
TCU 56, Texas State 21 (7-4)
TCU 14, at Clemson 10 (8-5)
TCU 39, SMU 14 (8-5)
TCU 20, at Air Force 17 (8-5)
TCU 44, Colorado State 6 (3-9)
TCU 38, Brigham Young 7 (11-2)
TCU 41, UNLV 0 (5-7)
TCU 55, at San Diego State 12 (4-8)
TCU 55, Utah 28 (10-3)
TCU 45, at Wyoming 10 (7-6)
TCU 51, New Mexico 10 (1-11)
Boise State 17, TCU 10
That's an incredible resume.
Here are some notes on TCU's unprecedented season (before the BSU game):
TCU was the only team to win at Air Force or at Clemson all year.
TCU shut out UNLV, the first team to so since 2002.
TCU played two current top 25 teams (BYU and Utah), and won both of those games by an average margin of 45-17. Neither game was in doubt by halftime.
TCU played and beat seven teams with winning records, and won those games by an average score of 38-15.
TCU finished No. One in the country in total defense.
TCU won their last seven games by 27 points or more.
TCU's opponents finished 6-0 in their bowl games, including victories over Oregon State (8-5), Houston (10-4), Cal (8-5), Nevada (8-5), Fresno State (8-5), and Kentucky (7-6).
TCU has won 15 games in a row.
They were the only team that finished in the top five in total offense and defense.
And Boise State beat them 17-10.
Now, I'm not saying that BSU deserves to be ranked ahead of the Alabama-Texas winner, but they do deserve to be ranked with them, and split a national title.
This game proved that Non-AQ teams can play some serious defense.
If they are not ranked No. two, it is a complete and utter travesty.
In this sham of a post season system, Boise State, with a 14-0 record, is as just as worthy of a national championship as Texas or Alabama.
Boise State has been openly campaigning to join the Mountain West conference - this might be the final straw in a chain of events that seals that deal - whether it happens after this season, or in two or three years.
As for Alabama and/or Texas fans, remember Utah and Alabama last year, before jumping to any conclusions that BSU wouldn't have a real chance in a potential matchup.
As for the Mountain West, they finish 4-1 in bowls, still good enough for the best winning percentage of any conference.
