Mike Leach-Raiders' Al Davis: Maybe Opposites Don't Attract
As Frank Sinatra used to sing, Al Davis came into professional football singing, "My Way." He's never changed, though he hasn't had the coaches who could piece it all together.
Want to have thugs, no problem; just try and have 'em sober by game time. I've heard the stories firsthand from Kenny Stabler about those days when drinking and women were so rampant, bed check meant to make sure everyone had a woman.
Bar fights and brawls were perfectly acceptable whether you were fighting your enemies or your own teammates.
So if you've got a coach who wants to ride down his players for listening to their fat little girlfriends or lock 'em away in a cold dark place because they're whiny little Lord Silverspoon, where else would you be happy working other than for Al Davis?
That may be what Mike Leach is wondering. This could be paradise for both of them, and if the rumors swirling around the media are true, it sure would be interesting.
Al Davis ball is having an offense that has a mad bomber like Daryl Lamonica; Kenny Stabler and Jim Plunkett stretch the field while a band of hooligans in uniform keep the opponents' offense busy.
Al Davis likes big offense like Amy Winehouse loves cocaine, and who can deliver that better than Mike Leach? Offense, that is.
And it's fine with Al if Leach yells at them for slacking off like he did at Adam James. Hell, he might even come down from the office and yell at them along with him. What a one-two punch they could be.
And as for locking players away, I'm sure Al would build him a dungeon under the stadium to lock them up in if he asked. Hey, this is the NFL and it's just, "Win, baby!" up here.
I think this is a match made in heaven and would love to see it happen. Leach got in trouble for riding a player that thought he was privileged; he didn't deserve punishment for simply being an old style, Al Davis-type coach.
He deserves a good payday and this is one college coach that may actually make it in the NFL. And don't forget, he already has a closet full of black shirts!
But if it doesn't happen and Leach and Davis part ways badly, he can always coach at Tennessee.
