Monday Morning Cornerback: Week 18

Ricky WriterJan 4, 2010

It's the 18th week of the football season, college and professional combined. Here are my quick cuts and jukes from the past week's action.

College

The Georgia vs. Texas A&M game was boring as hell. Very sloppy at the beginning. A&M got thrashed by 24 points and now have a losing record of 6-7. My question is how the hell does a .500 team make it to a bowl game?

It should be mandatory for a bowl team to have a winning record not a .500 record. So, we are going to reward teams with mediocre records to play in bowl games. Perfect fans love watching undeserving teams play mediocre football in bowl games.

Temple outplayed UCLA in the Eagle Bank Bowl, but UCLA just had the better athletes in the end. Check out UCLA linebacker, Akeem Ayers, deja vu.

I told you all in my preview of the Champ Sports Bowl that if Jacory Harris showed up, the Canes would win easily. Errr, Jacory didn't show up. But overall the cold weather got to the Canes as they were pushed around by the Badgers all day long.

The Humanitarian bowl was the most exciting bowl game I've seen all year. The coolest thing from this bowl game was not the high scoring action or Bowling Green WR Freddie Barnes' record setting day.

It was the fact that the Idaho Vandals who were the "home" team did not want to dress in the "home" locker room. Why you might ask? Because the game was played at their rival Boise State's stadium and the "home" locker room belongs to Boise State. I guess the rivalry is that serious. The Idaho Vandals chose to dress in the visitors locker room instead.

Are we sure we gave the Heisman trophy to the right person? Did anyone see Suh dominate the Holiday bowl against Arizona? The Cornhuskers shut them out, 33-0. I think Texas might have been served well playing Nebraska, because their defense is far better than Alabama's right now.

Yo, the Moutain West conference came to play this bowl season. Chalk up another one, Fort Worth bowl victory, Air Force 47 over Houston 20. The MWC grand total is now 4-0 with TCU getting ready to hold it down for the conference tonight in a BCS game.

Boomer Sooner! To bad this wasn't a BCS game. Ok let me quit, a win is a win, and Stanford is a damn good team. Gerhart got his and if starting QB Andrew Luck had been able to play, the Cardinal might have come out on top in this one.

Navy kicked Mizzouri's ass 35-13. Mizzou should be ashamed of themselves. No offense to Navy, but Mizzou is a BCS team who a year ago was ranked in the top 5 in the country. Pathetic. Pull this shit again, and you might not be in a BCS conference much longer.

The Insight.com Bowl had two .500 teams. I refuse to comment on them because no .500 team deserves to play in a bowl game. I figure playing in a bowl game is enough love, they won't get any undeserving love from me.

VA Tech's Ryan Williams is the truth. Set a Hokie record for rushing yards in a single season by a frosh. Tennessee fucked themselves though, they could have won this game. Too many costly mistakes and turnovers.

Did I say the Humanitarian bowl game so far? Uh, let's call it a tie for now, because the Outback bowl went hard.

Way to go FSU and not trick off the dope! They did very well, playing like the FSU teams of old and sending legend Bobby Bowden out in style in his final game as FSU head coach with a win over his former team, West Virgina, FSU 33 WVU 21.

Cirtus Bowl officials have to do something about their field. It's pathetic. The Champs Sports Bowl was played there in fair weather conditions and the field was terrible and actually may have been to blame in Miami RB Graig Cooper tearing his ACL. The Citrus Bowl was held three days later, in monsoon like conditions so you can imagine how bad the field was. The game must go on and Penn State beat LSU in the Muddy Terrible Field bowl 19-17 in a close one.

The Rose Bowl was a good ass game. Jim Tressel took the strait jacket off Terrelle Pryor and let that boy play.

And play he did, on a bad PCL might I add. 20/37 for 266 yards passing 2 tds and one pick. He also rushed 20 times for 72 yards. Domination for Buckeye Nation. Buckeyes 26 Ducks 17.

Sugar bowl. Wasn't nothing sweet about it at all. Tebow and the Gators dominated the Cincy Bearcats 51-24. Not a very fun game to watch.

Was it just me or did the first three games on January 2nd suck? Not to sound negative but I was bored watching them. South Florida dominated Nothern Illinois 27 -3. South Carolina played so bad, I thought Stephen Garcia was related to Tim Donaghy, and UCONN won 20-7. And last but not least, Ole Miss vs. Oklahoma State in the Cotton Bowl gave me a little bit more action, but it didn't get poppin' until the second half.

Arkansas and East Carolina got it in though in the Music City bowl. I felt sorry for these cats, the temperature was in the 20's. I mean aren't bowl games supposed to be played in nice warm climates? That would make sense, you know. FYI, 2010, baller alert: Dwayne Harris #17 for ECU is a cold. I said it first so don't bite my hype up. Razorbacks won though, 20-17, on a field goal in OT.

Texas Tech minus Mike Leach came together and played very well. Michigan State played well too, minus 14 players whom the majority were suspended for an on campus fight. Good back and forth game. Too bad the commentators didn't realize it because all they commented on was the Mike Leach, Texas Tech, Adam and Craig James situation. Guns up! Red Raiders won 34-31. I like the backup QB, for the Red Raiders, Steven Sheffield, way better than Potts. He looks more gangster rocking #1 and the gloves.

NFL

The blizzard bowl took place in Buffalo yesterday. I'm glad the Colts laid down and took their beating. It'd be a shame for them to win it all and have that one loss. This way if they do win, two losses is alot better than one loss. I do worry that they've lost their edge however. We'll see in two weeks.

Umm Chicago vs. Detroit. I'm glad Jay Cutler doesn't have to throw passes anymore this season. Bears won though.

Pitt was out of it this year man. Especially the last half of the season. Yeah, they got the win, but only by six points to a team that was down to their third QB for much of the game.

New York Giants are the New York Fidos because they simply laid down and rolled over yesterday. They played like the Colts who played their reserves to avoid injury to their starters. Problem is the G-men played their starters and got molly whopped.

The NFC South and West divisions have to pick it up. The Falcons vs. Bucs game was uninspired to say the least. And San Francisco vs. St. Louis?? IDK, I can't pardon the Lou any longer, at some point they have to realize they are professionals and play like it. I feel sorry for Steven Jackson because he is a very very good player. Mike Singletary did something half decent and let Isaac Bruce start against his former team as he is nearing the end of his career.

New England Patriots, you get what you pay for. You pay for a cheap defense and you get a cheap defense. Houston Texans scored 21 unanswered points in the second half and won 34-27. Wes Welker is gone as well, and their is no third receiver to be found. Just two years ago Donte Stallworth and Jabbar Gaffney were the third and fourth receivers. Now they have none.

Carolina vs. Nawlins....umm no Brees, no Steve Smith...no 6Magazine watchie. I'm glad I didn't either. I heard it was an epic 23-10 loss for the Saints.

Cleveland won four straight. Mangini should still be fired. Jacksonville needs to pack the bus and move to LA.

Dallas is looking really good. Second shutout in a row. Maybe the first one over the Skins didn't count because they suck, but this one over the Eagles, you have to be impressed.

Bye Jim Zorn...it was cool while it lasted.

Chris Johnson 2009 season = history books. Most yards from scrimmage record is his and he cracked 2k by rushing for 2,006 yards. Woulda been cool if he rushed for 2010 though, either way good shit homie. I am going to take this second to pat myself on the back with awarding our first ever cover story.

Ray Rice has gotten 145 more carries than Willis Mcgahee and in part due to Mcgahee not being apart of the Summer team activities and Rice being apart of them. Also the injury bug and effort bug was hovering around Willis' head, but when he does things like this, you realize he still has the juice in em.

Green Bay and Arizona rematch next week. For some odd reason I see the outcome being the exact same as yesterday's 33-7 outcome. The Matt Leinhart pick six by Charles Woodson was not his fault. Woodson actually ran a better route than Larry Fitzgerald. I heart flawless CB play.

Hello, my name is Josh McDaniels. Once I'm fired from the NFL, I will make a GREAT college coach. In the same mold of Pete Carroll, Urban Meyer, etc. I have a great work ethic, I'm energetic, I'm ahead of my time as far as x's and o's and great old school principles. I have little man syndrome with a bit of a control issue as well which doesn't translate to the NFL when dealing with grown men, but college kids will be forced to listen.

Derrick Johnson balled out and so did Jamaal Charles....Longhorns shinning in KC I see. DJ had two pick six's for td's which is unheard of for a linebacker. Charles rushed for a KC record 259 yards and 2tds.

Umm Chad Ochocinco is no more. He apparently got lost on Revis Island and he stated that if he was out done by Revis he'd change his name back to Johnson. Revis is cold! A cold motherfucker for sure. He's faced 10 Pro Bowl receivers this year and the most catches he's given up has been 4 and the most yards has been 35. He's only allowed two tds, a short 5 yard pass to Randy Moss and a bomb to Ted Ginn, Jr. If Woodson doesn't win Defensive Player of the Year then Revis should. Well....after this week, I will slowly start to get sadder, because the college football season will be over and the ending of the NFL season will be near. Damn!

That's all I got,
