Was it a Huge Blunder for TCU's Daryl Washington to Talk Smack About BSU?
Boise State comes to this year's Fiesta Bowl in Glendale, Arizona with a major motivating factor.
They're out for revenge after last year's 17-16 loss to TCU in the Poinsettia Bowl.
TCU and Boise State will square off in Monday night's highly anticipated game between two unbeaten top ten teams in the 2010 Fiesta Bowl.
What TCU didn't need was for Boise State to have other reasons to come into the game even more fired up.
Well, BSU now has even more to be motivated about.
During a media day interview session, TCU's All-American senior linebacker Daryl Washington was asked about Boise State's All-American quarterback Kellen Moore and the five sacks that BSU has allowed opposing defenses this year.
"We'll have our way with him" was Washington's response.
Yes, I did mention that Washington is a senior. He has had an impressive career at TCU.
Washington tops TCU with 99 tackles, the most stops by a Horned Frog since 2004. A senior from Irving, Texas, Washington was a Dick Butkus Award semifinalist. He has 7.5 tackles for loss and is tied for the TCU lead with three interceptions.
He also might lead TCU in how to make boneheaded comments before a major bowl game.Ā
Did I mention he was a senior?
One thing that almost all coaches do prior to a big game is to tell his players what NOT to say.
Like not sayingĀ "we'll have our way with him."
Coaches are also very careful about whom they put in front of the media and how much experience a player might have in an interview environment.Ā
Senior team leaders are generally front and center for any major bowl media day.Ā
What a coach doesn't want is an inexperienced underclassman going out and slipping up by making a statement that might be considered "smack talk."
I believe I mentioned that Washington was a senior, right? Did I mention he's also a team leader and an experienced interview subject?
Perhaps TCU head coach Gary Patterson has a tape of Washington's statement that he can show to TCU bowl teams.Ā No doubt that tape is labeled "What not to say in an interview."
BSU has an attractive blond riding a beautiful bronco lead the Boise State players onto the field.
You can bet that when that horse comes charging out of the tunnel tonight with BSU colors ablaze that the players charging the field tonight will have plenty of motivation.
One is revenge, the other is TCU senior linebacker Daryl Washington.
