The Dream Matches That Will Never Happen

Ryan Senior Writer IJune 19, 2008

As a wrestling fan, during the Monday Night Wars especially, I've always thought of dream matches that I would like to see.

I dreamt of Sting vs Shawn Michaels, Stone Cold vs Goldberg and so on.

So when the WWF (now WWE) merged with the WCW and ECW in 2001, I thought all those dreams would be fulfilled.  But after the extremely lack luster "Invasion" angle, those quieted.

In 2002, however, things started to happen.  Austin & The Rock vs the nWo. Rock/Hogan at Wrestlemania. Rock/Goldberg the following year.  HHH/Goldberg.  HHH/Scott Steiner.  But with all those dream match ups, a few were missing.  And after awhile, it became apparent they would never happen.

For me, these are the dream matches that will never happen:

Stone Cold Steve Austin vs Hulk Hogan

Almost happened at Wrestlemania X8 in place of Hogan/Rock.  Both had massive egos at that point and ultimately the match was squashed because of a dispute over the finish, likely with neither wanting to do the job.

This would have been a great thing to behold, maybe not from a technical stand point, but to see the face of the WWF vs the face of the WCW/nWo would have been special.  It's a shame that back stage politics got in the way.

The Rock vs Shawn Michaels

Easily could have happened as both were on the roster from 1996-1998 together.  One could point to Michaels' retirement from a back injury as a major reason this never happened.

But there are two reasons this will never, EVER happen. Firstly, The Rock has stated that he is done with wrestling.  No more matches and appearances will be super rare.

Secondly, and I'm pretty sure this is fairly known by now, but when Rock was breaking in with the WWF, he believed that Shawn treated him poorly as this was the peak of Michaels' Kliq days.  Even with Shawn's new outlook on life, there is no going back on the way he treated a younger Rock.

This would be an instant classic.  The legendary Rock vs the greatest performer in wrestling history.  No doubt there would be a dramatic double knockdown, with a pause preluding a double nip-up.  Too bad it won't happen.

Bret "Hitman" Hart vs Kurt Angle

This had all the potential to top the epic Chris Benoit/Angle match ups of the past.  Bret is arguably the greatest technical performer ever and one of the best at selling.

Kurt is arguably the best wrestler to ever perform. If this match were to happen, I'd prefer it to be circa 2001, with Kurt in his goofy heel character.

It won't happen for obvious reasons.  Bret retired after being injured by Bill Goldberg at Starrcade 1999 and probably can't wrestle even if he wanted to.  Also, the way Kurt is going, I really feel he will be wrestling's next tragedy, but that's a whole other issue.

Sting vs Shawn Michaels

I'm not so sure I would want it to happen these days, with Sting looking quite old and not being the same guy he was during WCW's prime.  Michaels can still go with the best of them, however.

It would've been tremendous to see the Showstopper vs the Crow version of Sting because both were extremely resilient.  HBK would play the heel role very, very well in this situation.

It's pretty well known by now that Sting probably won't ever work for WWE.  He's stated in an interview with TNA that the only reason he didn't go to work for Vince after WCW shut down was he felt his character would be mishandled the way Goldberg, Nash, Booker, etc were. Sadly, he's probably right.

Even though these matches won't happen, as a fan, I can still dream.  I can remember these stars for everything they did and for what might have been.  Hopefully, future generations aren't left wondering "what if?"
