Devils' Martin Brodeur Once Again Makes History With Shutout
As of Monday night, Martin Brodeur tied Terry Sawchuck for the most shutouts of all time. He did it against that Buffalo Sabres while facing 22 shots on goal.
Brodeur tied Sawchuck with his 103rd shutout, which is twice the amount of Chris Osgood who is second among active players. He's also played in a little bit over 1,000 games. Over his career, he averaged a shutout every 10 to 11 games.
I don't think that Brodeur had much trouble getting this shutout either. There really weren't a lot of quality shots that he had to block. The defense did a great job keeping the puck away from him and limiting the scoring chances for Buffalo.
There isn't anyone that will say that he doesn't deserve this record. He's been working hard for his entire career and I know how much the Devils Fans appreciate it.
It's obvious that he's one of the best goalies in the world, and of all time. But he wouldn't have been nearly as good without a great team in front of him. He needed some great defense over the years to help him get this record.
This season, the Devils have relied on him heavily, just like they have in previous seasons. They are running a very defensive system that limits the scoring chances, and gives Brodeur the best chance to stop the puck. They are only attacking when they see the defense has made a mistake.
There aren't many teams in the NHL that can make this work. That's because there are not many goalies that you can rely on as much as Brodeur.
He pretty much sums up my belief of what a solid goalie can do for an organization. To me, teams are built around a good goalie, and Brodeur is the perfect example.
When you have great talent in net, and you can keep the puck away from him, you create a system that will win a lot of games. You also give that goalie the best chance to break some records.
If there's anything that you have to know about this record, it's that Brodeur didn't do it by himself. I'm sure that he's thankful for the help that he received in front of him, just like they appreciate the solid backup he has given them for so many years.
