Normally it is tough to predict which tight end is going to step up and have a big day. With Chris Cooley and Owen Daniels, two top options, out of action due to injury, things get shaken up even more.  Let’s take a look at the rankings for Week Nine:

  1. Antonio Gates - San Diego Chargers - at New York Giants
  2. Vernon Davis - San Francisco 49ers - vs. Tennessee
  3. Dallas Clark - Indianapolis Colts - vs. Houston
  4. Tony Gonzalez - Atlanta Falcons - vs. Washington
  5. John Carlson - Seattle Seahawks - vs. Detroit
  6. Brent Celek - Philadelphia Eagles - vs. Dallas
  7. Heath Miller - Pittsburgh Steelers - at Denver
  8. Jason Witten - Dallas Cowboys - at Philadelphia
  9. Jeremy Shockey - New Orleans Saints - vs. Carolina
  10. Fred Davis - Washington Redskins - at Atlanta
  11. Todd Heap - Baltimore Ravens - at Cincinnati
  12. Greg Olsen - Chicago Bears - vs. Arizona
  13. Kellen Winslow - Tampa Bay Buccaneers - vs. Green Bay
  14. Tony Sheffler - Denver Broncos - vs. Pittsburgh
  15. Benjamin Watson - New England Patriots - vs. Miami

Thoughts:

  • Vernon Davis has four touchdowns in the past game and a half, since Alex Smith was inserted as the QB.  Facing off with the subpar passing defense of the Titans, there’s a good chance the good times will continue.
  • Fred Davis gets his first chance to shine as the starting tight end since the injury to Chris Cooley and he has a favorable matchup to do so.  Look for him to have a strong follow-up to his Week 7 performance (8 receptions, 78 yards, 1 TD) and is a great replacement if you are in need.
  • It hasn’t been the best few weeks for Greg Olsen, with 12 catches, 121 yards and 1 TD over the past three games.  Still, with Jay Cutler at the helm against a tough Cardinals passing defense, you have to think he may go the safe route early and often.
  • John Carlson hasn’t scored a TD since Opening Day, but he faces off against the Lions.  From a position where you never know where the next big game will come from, can you really ask for much more?

What are your thoughts?  Who was left off the list?  Who should be higher?  Who should be lower?
