Dodger Stadium Broken Pipe Floods Field with Sewage During Game

Joseph ZuckerMar 27, 2018

Tuesday's game between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Los Angeles Angels ended after five innings after a pipe burst at Dodger Stadium.

The Athletic's Pedro Moura reported some Dodgers players believed sewage had leaked out of the pipe and onto the field. Outfielder Andrew Toles certainly implied as much.

"I smelled it," Toles said, per Moura. "It was nasty. I'm not gonna tell you what it really was. That's messed up. That's a tragic thing."

The Dodgers won the abbreviated game, 4-3. The Angels may have gotten the last laugh on Twitter, though:

Ending an exhibition game early isn't a major concern for the Dodgers. And it was their final spring training game.

The problem for the team is that it opens the 2018 regular season at home Thursday against the San Francisco Giants.

Dodgers part-owner Stan Kasten spoke to reporters after the game and said officials from the city of Los Angeles were at the stadium and addressing the leak. Kasten added he doesn't believe the leak will impact Opening Day, per Michael J. Duarte of NBC Los Angeles:

One thing is clear: Having sewage seep onto the field isn't a good omen for the year ahead. It's the second foreboding sign for Los Angeles this spring after third baseman Justin Turner fractured his wrist earlier this month.
