This season the top ranked Gators of the Southeastern Conference are winning (5-0). What’s new? The Boise State Broncos of the Western Athletic Conference are also winning (6-0). What's new?

The only thing new for, and between these two teams, is their strength of schedules. Boise State is ranked 38th and Florida 46th.

Heading Home From the Bakery

The sports world generally has respect for what the Boise State Broncos have accomplished in roughly 14 years in Division One football. Still, the weak schedule that the Broncos are tagged with is the wagging that opposing fans use to win their arguments.

Year in and year out, it's SOS this and SOS that, blah blah blah. Surprising them is that SOS is built on not only who is played but how well the other teams are doing.

Not everyone on the Boise State schedule is doing poorly. That’s right, the Broncos' competition is all not cupcakes and cream puffs. But how bout that SEC?

A Comparative View

Bronco pastry teams thus far have been the Oregon Ducks (Pac 10), Fresno State Bulldogs (WAC), and Tulsa (C-USA). With the exception of the Ducks, this appears not to be that frightening of a competition. Yes, the Ducks are whipping up on everyone but Boise State and Fresno State took a very good Big Ten team into overtime, and Tulsa is always a threat.

Florida, one of the greatest teams in college football today, is never questioned regarding its schedule. Why? Because they are the money pool of the BCS. The Florida Gators get the best when it comes to recruiting and they play well, but who are they playing this year?

Florida played LSU, a fearsome team, a lot like the caliber that Boise State played in the Ducks, but it tapers off big time after that.

Call me silly, but Florida’s competition (Troy, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Arkansas) does not necessarily bring shivers down the spines of opposing football teams. Or do they? Are any of these teams winning, and if so, to whom are they giving the beat down?

If any of the Gators' competition was winning, their SOS would not be lagging behind the Broncos' at present. Kind of like Bowling Green, Miami of Ohio, and Cal Davis (previous Boise State competition)—not very impressive, but who’s counting?

The Broncos Are Content

This year the Broncos' SOS is eight points better than the Gators. Why? Because unlike last year, the teams playing Boise are not individually better, but they are individually playing better. Boise State has nothing to prove.

Every year Boise State has been in the BCS buster conversations and the Broncos, as if they needed any reminding, are the top contender this year. Big deal? Yes, but just for the other contenders.

The Broncos are doing what they always do. Winning. And that's another story.

Go Broncos
