Report: Kendrick Perkins, Cavaliers Agree to Contract; Will Be on Playoff Roster

The Cleveland Cavaliers turned back the clock and signed veteran center Kendrick Perkins on Monday, according to Adrian Wojnarowski and Dave McMenamin of ESPN.

Wojnarowski noted Perkins will occupy Cleveland's final roster spot in the postseason after he played some of the 2017-18 campaign for the team's G League affiliate.

Perkins hasn't appeared in a regular-season NBA game since he was a member of the New Orleans Pelicans in 2015-16 when he averaged a mere 2.5 points and 3.5 rebounds a night in 37 contests.

However, Jake Fischer of Sports Illustrated reported in February that several teams were looking into signing him for the stretch run of the 2017-18 campaign.

In addition to his time with the Pelicans, Perkins has played for the Boston Celtics, Oklahoma City Thunder and Cavaliers since he came into the league as a first-round pick in 2003.

He thrived at times with the Celtics by routinely grabbing boards and providing rim protection on the defensive side for title-contending teams.

Perkins averaged 6.4 points, 6.1 rebounds and 1.4 blocks per game in his eight seasons with Boston and posted a career-best 10.1 points per game in 2009-10. He also helped the team win the 2007-08 championship and averaged a double-double (11.9 points and 11.6 rebounds) in 14 playoff games in 2008-09.

The 2008-09 season was part of a four-year stretch when he averaged at least 7.6 rebounds a night for Boston and the Thunder.

However, it has been some time since he was that player.

Still, he provides veteran experience with 143 postseason appearances in his career and is familiar with the grind of the playoff race and what it takes to win once a team gets there.

That, along with his ability to help provide stability in the locker room, appeared to have intrigued the Cavaliers enough to take a chance on him for the remainder of the season.
