Discrimination Against Black Coaches? I Think Not

New York Mets coach Willie Randolph says he was treated differently because of his race. I highly doubt it. He was most likely treated the way he was because his team is playing like absolute crap and he is the one in charge.

If in fact Randolph was treated differently, why didn't he come out sooner? He didn't make a point of this until he was under the microscope when his team went downhill. To me, it seems like he is using this as a way to divert attention away from his struggling Mets.

Of course, this is not the first time race has come up in sports, and it certainly won't be the last.

Last year at the Formula One race in Spain, black driver Lewis Hamilton was hit with racial slurs the entire weekend, but he didn't let it bother him. He focused on winning. Maybe Randolph should win more and then he wouldn't have to worry about anything.

This is a sensitive issue in the media today. I have read in places that some minority athletes think the press is harder on them when they get into trouble with the law.

That is wrong. The reason they are in the press more is because most of the athletes getting arrested are black. I live in Indianapolis, and we have had players get arrested from the Pacers and they have all been of a minority race.

I am not saying that they were arrested because of their race, but they were all over the media. I am sure if a white player was arrested the coverage would be the same.

Back to baseball. None of the other minority managers have said anything about being a victim of discrimination. I personally don't think Randolph was either, but maybe the thing to do is to look into the people he is accusing, instead of talking about the rest of the world of sports.

If I were in Willie Randolph's shoes, I would make my team better so the critics would shut up and there would be no problem to begin with.
