Clint Dempsey Ties Landon Donovan's Record for Most Goals in USA History
Clint Dempsey tied Landon Donovan's United States men's national team goal-scoring record Saturday night with a free kick in the 82nd minute that handed his side a 2-0 Gold Cup semifinal win over Costa Rica.
The goal, which was captured by Fox Soccer on Twitter, was Dempsey's 57th in a United States uniform.
Dempsey entered Saturday's semifinal as a substitute in the 66th minute, and his arrival immediately woke up a side that lacked killer instinct in the attacking third.
In addition to the historic strike—which was his second career USMNT goal off the bench, per ESPN Stats & Info's Paul Carr—Dempsey set up his team's first goal with some crafty dribbling and a savvy pass ahead to Jozy Altidore, who broke a 0-0 deadlock in the 72nd minute.
Dempsey will try to make a similar impact Wednesday when the United States returns to the pitch seeking its second Gold Cup title in the last four years against the winner of Sunday's semifinal between Mexico and Jamaica.
