Players To Watch

Lonzo Ball (Los Angeles Lakers)

No rookie is arriving to the NBA with more hype than Ball. Not only is he coming off a dynamic freshman campaign at UCLA, but the consistently over-the-top comments from his father, LaVar Ball, has put an incredible amount of pressure on his shoulders.

Add in the fact he's playing for a storied franchise like the Lakers and is expected to play a crucial role in the team's turnaround efforts, and it's easy to see why big things are expected. Playing in the Summer League is the first step toward proving he can handle the heat.

Lonzo told Joey Ramirez of the Lakers' official website he's been "in the weight room working on my craft every day" since the draft and has high hopes for the Summer League.

"Win the whole thing," he said.

Those hopes took a serious hit Friday night with an overtime loss to rivals Los Angeles Clippers. The guard made just two of his 15 attempts in the contest for a forgettable debut, at least from a shooting perspective. He did showcase good vision and passing skills, though.

Nevertheless, it's the type of confidence fans have come to expect from the Ball family in recent months. It's also the kind of mentality that's likely necessary for Los Angeles to finally push itself out of the rebuilding cycle and back into the playoff conversation in the near future.

Bam Adebayo (Miami Heat)

Adebayo already has some experience under his belt from the Orlando Summer League. Although there were some up-and-down moments, which is typical for a young player, the 14th overall pick in this year's draft showcased plenty of playmaking ability at both ends of the floor.

He possesses an intriguing skill set thanks to his high-end athleticism, length and explosiveness around the rim. The focus early in his pro career will be becoming more consistent, and summer games are a perfect place to start that process.

The NBA highlighted some of his best moments from Orlando:

Adebayo should get a nice test from the Spurs, who play the same disciplined system whether it's the Las Vegas Summer League or the NBA playoffs. That's why San Antonio took home the championship two years ago under the guidance of Becky Hammon.

Of course, Heat fans should enjoy watching the power forward develop over the next few years, regardless of how he plays Saturday night.

Derrick White (San Antonio Spurs)

The Spurs always seem to zig when everybody else is trying to zag. That's how they scored impact international players like Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili back in the day. This year, while most teams were focused on college freshmen with tools, San Antonio took a battle-tested senior.

White traveled a long road to land in San Antonio. He started with Division II program UCCS and was forced to sit out a year due to NCAA transfer rules before joining the University of Colorado at the D-I level for his senior campaign.

The 23-year-old combo guard explained to Lorne Chan of the Spurs' official website he hopes his story will help inspire others to keep chasing their dreams.

"There are a lot of great examples of people who didn't have that much attention, went to smaller schools, and now they're All-Stars," White said. "Damian Lillard, Steph Curry just to name a few. They were motivations for me. If I can be the same motivation for a kid in Division II or a kid who isn't being recruited, that's awesome."

The Spurs are getting older in the backcourt, which means the opportunity for White to earn playing time might not be far off on the horizon. A strong showing during the team's games in Vegas would be a nice first step to show he's ready for the chance.
